Virgin media broadband speed

I have been having problems the 2mb broadband connection for just over a week now, basically getting half the speed. I originally thought it was because i was downloading too much, but after looking at their traffic management info i found out i wasn't.
I finally decided to call them up, to which they responded by blaming my router, so i took it out of the equation and connected my pc directly to the set top box. After phoning them back up they say i need a cable modem installed as the set top box can't receive more than a 1mb connection. So now an engineer is coming next friday to install the modem.
Fine, atleast i know what the problem is, im just annoyed that i have only just been told about the limit of 1mb to set top boxes. It's not too bad because before this past week i hadn't noticed it being at 1mb, and when i did i thought it was being capped, but i now know differently.
My complaint is that i have been paying £18 for a 2mb connection for all this time, which in most cases i wasgetting 1mb. Surely they should know which customers are on a 2mb connection, and whether they have a cable modem or not. They should also automatically contact them to say you need the modem to get the full speed.
Any thoughts? Should i speak to customer services about this?
