I took a meter reading for lekky at 7.30am today and by 1.30pm have already used 10kwh. I've done ironing, washing machine on (just once), my lap top on most of day, big telly in kitchen - couple of hours. Kettle 2/3 times, no lights on, electric oil heater has been on since 6am (now realise it could've been off as not cold!) fish tank plugged in 24/7, showers come via combi boiler, fridge and separate freezer in ktchen, larger fridge/freezer in garage. husband works from home a lot so couple of lap tops on the go too.

I don't think I'm going to make the 15kwh average daily use I fear as already up to 10kwh.

Neither do I. :p I suppose it's a bit like giving up smoking (luckily I never started)...you have to *really* want to do it.

HAVE YOU SEEN QUENTIN'S CASHBACK CARD??
  • In 24 hours the house has used 32kwh of leccy. That is with only one wash and one dishwasher wash. Is there a thread I can visit to make comparisons get advice here re leccy & gas? I find this site quite hard to navigate around and also hard to find my threads. What is the trick to finding your way around easily? Thanks...

For a family of six with someone home all the time 15 kwh per day may be too optimistic but a bill of £1800 a year implies 45kwh a day which is far too much. Just by taking regular readings of your meter you will become more energy conscious and identify those items which are most energy hungry (like electric oil heaters :))

Consumption can be cut, last winter we averaged 26 kwh per day, this winter its been 16.5 kwh per day and we're now averaging under 15 kwh a day (6 bed house, 3 adults, someone at home all the time, oil heating but electric showers, tumble dryer and a full cooked meal every night)

Plus, even though I fear the 'clever brigade' may come down on me like a ton of bricks, lol, with annual leccy charges that high you would be entirely justified in investing in an Owl Monitor. Costs about £35 and can certainly help you see what sort of usage patterns are contributing to the massive consumption and therefore help you to modify your usage. More details here:

  • The £1800 a year does include arrears of £450. so we're paying that off too. you've done well rhiwfield to get it down from 26kwh to under 15kwh a day. Atlantic are going to send me information about what kwh appliances use round the house. Also someone told me Lidl have an energy monitor £8 to gauge amount used. I will look into the Owl Monitor but seems a bit pricey at £35 - could be worth a look on Ebay?

Thing is, how much are you prepared to give up/cut back?

The oil heater? Second fridge? Tumble drying? If not those, what?
  • The oil heater is only on background heat in winter months as no other heating in the kitchen. But if it proves to be a drain then I will have to look for an alternative. I never tumble dry but with 3 kids there is a lot of washing in week. Losing the big fridge would be difficult as only have tiny one in the kitchen. I need to find out if fish tank with 3 plugs is a drain and also the use of lap tops and IT stuff in the house. As my husband works from home this could be a bigger drain than we realise.

Laptops low energy. Fish tank might be. Oil heater if more than an hour or two will clock up a lot over a winter. Anything generating heat costs - I do about ten wash loads a week but that's probably less than 4kwh or 50p, because only one load is done at higher than 30deg. Dishwasher far more expensive to run as water so much hotter.
  • I'd not realised the impact of using the dishwasher so often (every 2 days, originally it was twice a week but advent of kids increased use). Also I tend to wash whites at 60deg and darks 40. Looks as if that will need to change now as washing so much. Oil heating is on most of day in winter and also evening. That will have to change now but it gets freezing in the kitchen. I assume the gas combi boiler would not be a big drain?

If it's freezing in the kitchen and it's 2kw on for twelve hours a day, that's 24kwh! That would be £3 a day for me. Gas boiler should be fine. I use my dishwasher every day (about 1.75kwh or 22p). I do one load of whites a week at 95deg (1.75kwh) and the rest at 30deg (0.3kwh).

    Obsessed? Me? 'Fraid so!
