help - I can't change my s***ing broadband whatever I do!

I'm having a few problems with this whole broadband/phone switching business - I thought it was supposed to be simple.

Our bills from BT have been astronomical ever since we moved into a new build flat and they (kind of) tricked us into an 18 month contract when setting up the line rental. Now the contract is up, and I want to change.
So first of all I called BT and asked for my MAC number, which took them 20 minutes of messing about to give to me.

Then I went (via greasy palm) to various providers sites to check out some of the deals. The best value seemed to be tiscali - but I fell at the first hurdle, when a message came up saying that they can't provide a connection where I live.
So I thought I'd go to Virgin Media, which was the next best deal price wise - jumped through their admin hoops for a bit, then couldn't get any further when the site asked for my previous address because it won't accept the postcode as valid for some reason.
So I gave up, came here, and read a few threads with people complaining how bad virgin media are and it's kind of put me off a bit.
Sooo, I need help. I want to switch my broadband and homephone, I want to do it with as little messing about as possible (i.e. not having to remember the postcode of all eleven houses I've ever lived in or have to change back in three months time because it's only a short term offer!) and preferably save some money!
I've read the article about this, but it's still not left me much the wiser. We actually rarely use the phone for outgoing calls, and if we do they're always to mobiles, so I'm not really bothered about inclusive call packages or free weekend calls or anything - just cheap line rental. We do use the broadband a lot though.

Any ideas? Please? I'm lost!

Go onto the Samknows website and check what services are available on your exchange. If there are LLU operators they may well be cheaper than BT.

Lucky escape, do some more research as they are the most complained about ISP bar none!
