Please don't get one!! These are a constant source of worry and distress for women who then can't 'find' the heartbeat because they don't know how to and then find themselves in unnecessary panic. Midwives and medical professionals are trained to locate the heartbeat and although it's not rocket science there is a knack to this skill.

You will soon be able to feel the baby move (f you're not already) that will be the only reassurance you will need.

  • Must say, i bought my wife an Angelsound doppler at 15 weeks and she loves it. Sometimes i get home to find her lying on the sofa using it... lol

It was only 25 quid, worked best after 18 weeks (and yes, was very hard to use at the start) but not she can find the heartbeat after a few minutes

I would second the Anglesound doppler - we bought one and the wife thinks its excellent.

One tip though - buy some ultrasound transmission gel at the same time - it makes a massive difference! We bought ours from babymad.com where you can buy a doppler and gel bundle http://www.babymad.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=82&category_id=23&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=26

    Cheers

I bought the angle sound too. Less than £20 from ebay. For me, due to my last pregnancy it is comforting to be able to check the heartbeat myself. First picked up the heartbeat at 11 weeks. You need to use some sort of gel with it though (I use... durex play) to get clear sound. You can also hear movements too. It's easier to use than hibebe etc, doesnt have an LCD but you can work out the rate if needed by counting.

i would second the advice on not to get one. untrained people dont know what they are listening for and you may panic unnecessarily if you cant find the heart beat.

If it gives you peace of mind then get one. I bought one on ebay and then sold it back when i had my wee girl.
After losing my wee boy i found it invaluable for me to enjoy my pregnancy

yes i can see that standpoint too - but any healthcare professional will tell you not to get one as they can cause LESS peace of mind rather than more.

I am 24 weeks pregnant and bought one off ebay and didn't use it till I was about 10 weeks. I had the Hi-Bebe BT-200 doppler and found it to be great.

The professionals don't recommend you use them, but that's not because of any harm you can cause, more that it can be difficult to locate the heartbeat and I would expect there are people that would get anxious and start pestering GP's and midwives, etc, and taking up appointments getting the reassurance.

If you do decide to get one, when you use it you are looking for a very quick pow-pow-pow type of noise. I thought I had heard my baby with the doppler, but when I went for my 15 week check with the midwife (...and didn't let on that I had used a doppler!) she picked up the same thing at first but said that was the cord bloodflow (...the blood flow between me and the baby!). She probed a bit more and literally after a bit of probing around, she managed to get a much quicker beat, which was the baby. After that, I was able to come home and find it myself, knowing that I had the right thing. It was nice to use to keep in tune with the baby especially before you begin to show.

I am 24 weeks now so the baby is very active and this can be felt from both the inside and outside now, so I don't need the doppler to know that the baby is active, so I have just sold it on ebay for the same as what I bought it, so haven't lost out.

So, don't think you will lose out by buying one, as you can simply sell on yourself after you have used it.

Hope this helps and good luck with whatever you decide.

you're much better relying on feeling the babies movements and kicks for reassurance. the OP is not going to use the doppler until 20 weeks by which stage she should be feeling movements (although some women dont until a bit later than that).
