Acetone as an addertive in petrol or diesel - anyone tried it?

I've seen this for quite some time now. People either tend to have an increase in power and mileage, or nothing.

I was just wondering the long term effects on the engine and automotive plastics?

Here are two sites, but if you google you will find more, so think it is bit more to it than an urban myth?

OK, I can't spell additive! :p
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

Acetone as an additive? No I haven't and won't be trying it.

I won't be adding any solvent to my car.

I know someone who's performed a scientific test on his car and seen a marked increase in performance and milage. I've never had the guts to try it though in the same car.

I tried it a couple of years back in a few tankfuls of fuel on my bike but didn't see any noticeable improvement either in performance or economy.

Some automotive enthusiasts add acetone at around 1 part in 500 to their fuel, following claims of dramatic improvement in fuel economy and engine life.[9] This practice is controversial as the body of systematic testing shows that acetone has no measurable effect or may in fact reduce engine life by adversely affecting fuel system parts.[10][11] Debates on this subject and the perennial claims of a "Big Oil" cover-up intensified when the practice was addressed on the popular American TV show MythBusters in 2006, and shown to have negative effect in the televised fuel economy test.[12]

I tried it in a 2.4 Terrano, mpg went from 25mpg to 28mpg. You only put a small amount in so I wonder about the claims regarding damage to fuel lines. Fuel lines don't last forever anyway and most service shedules recomend changing them after a set mileage anyway.
I don't use my Terrano that often, so didn't really find the savings worthwhile with all the calculating and measuring out needed.
Some fuel injector cleaners are supposed to containe acetone anyway.

If a diesel, after market additives (as opposed to the additives in all diesel at the pump, all additives are not the same) like Millers Diesel Sport 4 do improve economy (I measure around 5%), smooth running and *possibly* a touch better performance. So subtle it's hard to tell if it's really there, all in the mind may be ;)

    Hi

The diesel fuel pump runs on very fine tolerances and the only lubrication it has is from the diesel fuel itself. Acetone is a powerful solvent so if you add it to the diesel fuel there is a risk that it will displace the diesel from the pump’s internal surfaces and increase wear rate. Diesel pumps cost around £1200 + VAT and fitting so it’s probably best to avoid acetone in diesel.

Fifth Gear did tests on various additives and found that, without exception, the additive gave worse fuel consumption than without it.
