But the previous guys estimates are way out.

It wasn't a quote;. I just said it will be under £250. I haven't a clue how much it should cost.

But Jeannie (or anyone) can you answer a question for me? When a main dealer quotes for your first service mine on the Jeep was £169 (or thereabouts) is the oil included in that price or added on at the end along with the rip off charge for washer fluid?

Whilst I'm at it what is a unit of oil at a garage?

If someone quotes a service - it should include everything including VAT, unless they state otherwise. Any extras, say brake pads - they should call and ask if you would like them done and give you the cost.

Unit of oil? We charge for 5w30 and 10w40 £5.07 per litre plus VAT. We do a more expensive oil for certain high powered vehicles, but sorry Hintza, can't remember the price of that off the top of my head.

This is the way we work - and I believe it is the way alot of garages and some main dealers work - but I can't really speak for them.

I guess it is a good idea to ask what is included in the price you are quoted and to ask if it includes VAT too. If in doubt - ask for a written quote. They can't argue with that.

A bit tricky since they took the oil and 30 mins of labour off my bill (remember engine change)

My intial service was say £169 + some odds and sods + 11 units of oil @ £85. Total was about £255. Now I had phoned up and was quoted the £169 figure. So why was the oil added and why 11 units? Is a unit 500ml? I would have thought a unit was 1 litre?

Very odd........ I would ask what they mean by units, can't be a litre, don't know of any car that would take 11 litres. I would challenge them. Can't understand how they can quote for a service and not include the oil, and then add it on afterwards........... It was engine oil wasn't it??

Think we should all request quotes in writing from now on - and make sure that they detail them down to the last penny! Verbal isn't good enough really.

As you know I had the engine changed via the insurance company and they still tried to charge me for the oil to go in it! Plus full charge for the service! After I complained the oil and 30 mins of labour was taken off the bill, but I do still feel a bit stitched up by them.

    Gold plated oil?
    Not Again
  • i would assume a unit it 0.5L of oil
  • Just to add my bit in !! there are advantages in having your car serviced at a main dealer and if you shop around main Honda dealers you may find there service prices will vary a bit .

Regarding oils some makes are now using fully synthetic oils which are expensive .
Also having a car serviced at the franchise dealer will make the car when traded in more desirable !! ask yourself would you prefer to buy a car with a full franchise service history or an independent garage service history !! any recalls which the car may have had will be picked up. Genuine parts will have been used .

If a major problem occurs you will not have the argument that the service schedule had not been followed.and to be honest most problems with cars are recurring so they will be well aware what it is

Once the car is 3 years old it may make sense to use an independent but only just
