Working women almost certainly caused the credit crunch

Un-PC take on Credit Crunch

Women also have an important role to play in jobs that are too demeaning for men, like teaching

In short, women were the driving force behind the greed, consumerism and materialism of the Celtic Tiger years and it was female employment that funded their oestrogen-crazed acquisitiveness

Although the article itself isn't written in the best light, the underlying message is of course true - the gradual shift in society over the last few decades has meant that each family unit now requires dual-income, where single used to be sufficient. This means that significantly more jobs have to be available for all these adults to perform. But it also means that cost of living has increased to warrant the dual income.

Of course, as a single woman earning my own bread I won't be handing in my notice! And neither do I think anyone else should. Women joining the workplace decades ago is a contributory factor, which was inevitable following the world wars. It's certainly not something we can now choose to reverse! Indeed history and trends suggest that the Western world may soon switch to a female dominance with more men taking a back seat...

I love Ireland, having relations there, but it is stuck in the 1950's. Unless it comes to working out how to get money from the EU that is :D
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.
  • Is it April 1st already?

I don't think my hubby would be too pleased if I quit my job and told him he had to go to work instead!

Why assume if it's a single income household then only men should be working?

That journalist must really hate women.

If you strip it down to facts and numbers, it's a feeling I've had for a number of years. Two income households has helped to fuel things, then on top of that the expectation by families that they should have (and need) a second income then lead to that whole expensive and unwieldy tax credits system and culture.

As for teaching, women used to be allowed to be teachers until they got married, then they were actually forced to give up.
  • Teaching is 'demeaning'? So education, and kids, don't matter? That's a very ugly society he's describing as an ideal.
  • And, by inference, women are 'lesser' and should take mens' leavings. Obviously it's provocative... but what a stinking little soul that person has.

"Why not make a start by telling your other half to quit her job? She can ask you for the housekeeping on Friday."

Why didn't the author make the obvious point that women coming back to work after maternity leave have 'nappy brain' and should stay at home?

  • What a disgusting article.

I actually can't believe it was printed.

Can you imagine the furore if an article was printed suggesting that immigrants should be sacked to ensure more jobs for the Irish?

The guy who wrote it is a satirist who previously poked fun at the IRA and lived, so taking on half of the population of Ireland is probably just the next step...
