Honda Accord 4 pads + discs £420, help!

Options
Hi Guys

I've got a Honda 06 plate Accord 2.2 diesel, just got my servicing done for £220 and apparently now all my brakes are down to 90%, on the quote it says
Front discs ridged, Front pads worn
Rear discs rusted, Rear pads worn

I dont doubt the dealer, but it just seems like a lot of money for the above, i'm probably going to get a few quotes from independents and see what they come up with (Kwik fit have already quoted £450!), the cars only done 28k, i brought it when it had done 16k and all my miles have been motorway miles, just seems like at least the discs should of lasted longer.

Any tips guys? :(

heres your 2 mistakes, doubt the dealer and dont trust kwik fit, they will obviously tell you they need done.
try local independants, not fast fit chains or dealers.
at 28k dont be surprised if they do need changing though,it seems a fair mileage to be needing them done.
my focus needed its first set of pads and discs at around 30k,its coming up for 60k now and its just been MOT'D today with one advisory of front discs scored,so i will need to change them soon. ( done by my trusted MOT garage)

    Rough translation (IMO)

Front discs ridged = so what, they all do that. Its the degree of wear that matters.
Rear discs rusted = so what, they all do that. The rust will be on the edge of the disc, and is irrelevant.

What matters is that the discs are not at or beyond minimum thickness, and that they are structurally sound.

    Get another opinion.
  • Thanks guys, will ring around tomorrow and get some prices.

re the rust, I thought that was normal too but then I thought the dealer must know what they are talking about.

Go to a local garage and not K-FIt would not trust them with a toy car.
I will put money on it just being the pads.
I have just change the pads on our car and its done 32K disc's are fine.
The only reason the disc's could be worn is if you or someone has run the pads to the bare metal in the past.
Pads are about £25 per axle + a few pounds for labour well £25ish at a local garage.
We have just had our car main dealer serviced and they told us the spare had 3mm of tread on pity they didnt take it out of the holder they would of seen the 3rd that was below 1mm!
Main dealer's are Not always right!

  • I'v had this problem with servicing before. To me it sounds like a scare story to get you to have the work done. Lets face it if a garage says your brakes need doing it does make you get them done.

in 2007 i had the brakes and pads done on all 4 wheels of my 2003 Toyota Celica.
The cost of parts alone was almost £430 when bought from the local autoparts - i got the receipt. Family friend fitted the whole lot and adjusted the handbrake for about £20...total bill - £450.

For a Honda Accord i'm not too surprised at that price - assuming it's to replace discs and pads and not just the pads.

i agree with other posters - i wouldn't go near kwik fit.
A local garage would be a decent alternative if you can get a recommendation from someone who's used it. If the price is to replace the whole lot, and that's the price from the dealer, i'd be booking it in there.

  • yep the was for both pads and discs, not sure if discs are needed though, will go round to a few independents on Monday.
What sounded good about Kwik Fit was that they replace all pads for free as long as you own the vehicle.

ATS are quite cheap for disks and pads, got my 2004 Vectra front disks and pads replaced last year for £110, to buy the disks and pads for DIY would be around £80, so for the extra £30 it wasnt worth the hassle doing it myself and i didnt have the right tools anyway.

The price did start higher but they seem willing to haggle :)

I wouldnt trust Kwik Fit either they are robbing gits

As others have said, have nothing to do with Kwik Fit. The lifetime guarantee is all very well but not only will they charge you almost twice the going rate for a simple job like replacing brakes but everytime you come back to get a free replacement they'll undoubtedly find other "problems" with the car that need "fixing".
