I seem to remember that the machine came with mcafee thrown in, which i thought i'd deleted cos it was conflicting with the norton.
the only reference to mcafee that i can see is in programs - mcafee spamkiller, which i left alone as it didnt seem to be affecting anything.
I'd have thought that BT would have updated me automatically, or at least told me wot i had to do and made sure i was protected.
I know their wireless connection mangler, sorry, manager, is anything but.
and their help screens seem to need constant "critical" updates...

Your only on SERVICE PACK 2
You NEED to be on service pack 3 (Security updates and microsoft fixes)
Goto START and WINDOWS UPDATE, CUSTOM and find 'service pack 3' and download and install it (After Nortons gone though)

Im not so sure about Browntoas advice of installing Mcafee mind. But we'll see how you get on with it anyways

    thanks alienrik,
So is it generally agreed that my Norton set up is no good, or out of date?
If I do remove it, will those other things that I've downloaded give protection?

ah SP3... Went looking for it once, but mr Gates didn't seem to think i needed it. One of the other machines in the house seems to have accquired it automatically, but I couldn't even get it to download! following that, I read up on it and thought that the concensus was that it was only an amalgamation of all the patches that one shud have been getting via Windows auto updates anyway, and nothin critical; but if you guys think its essential thats good enough for me, and i shall try again ( espesh as I don't trust my ISPs protection any longer!)

I would say its critical yes
Try installing it with NOTHING else running (Switch off firewall, anti virus etc)

Id definitely remove Norton using the REMOVAL TOOL that was posted.

You need a 'real time scanner' anti virus in its place (Meaning your not protected, no)

Personally id switch on windows firewall (For now) and download AVIRA Anti Virus
Download AVIRA ANTI VIRUS PERSONAL (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')

alienrik, jus tried windows update again now as you suggested, but this time custom option ( i tried auto last time) - stil nothing, told me i had no critical updates and again, didnt offer me SP3. Is it cos I's XP "media center" edition?
Windows firewall turned on for now.
Think I'll attack it anew in the morning.zzzzzzzzzz

    Download it direct then ~
    http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-service-pack-3.html
    (select 'CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD')

Put it on your drive ready. Disconnect from the net and shut down everything you can. Then install

    ALienrik et al,

    Norton now all gone
    Now running on SP3
    BT McAfee installed

HijackThis, Malwarebytes Anti Malware & Super Anti Spyware & AVIRA downloaded and run, but AVIRA seems to have disappeared ( removed by McAfee? )

Does this mean I'm finally where I need to be protection wise?

Probably, 1GB is about the minimum these days isnt it.
I installed an extra 1GB in my main pc recently (doubling it to 2GB) , but haven't noticed much difference disappointingly. And it was a matched pair of modules from Crucial. Any ideas?
