Problem with BT

Can anyone please give me their thoughts / ideas on the following problem.

I've decided to change my current phone/broadband/tv package and go with Sky. So I phoned BT to see exactly when my contract expired and was told it was March, I took a call reference number, i then e-mailed BT for a MAC number as phoning for one is a nightmare.

Next I phoned Sky and arranged everything telling them I was waiting for the MAC number from BT they were ok and everything was done over the phone.
Then 4 days later I get an e-mail from BT saying my contract doesn't end until September, I e-mailed back quoting the call reference number and the reply came back saying I'd signed up to an 18month contract not 12 which was a bit taken aback with.

Does anyone know where I stand from a legal point of view?

Thanks in advance.

  • apologies for jumping in on your thread nmp, but i also have a similar problem.

in return for a reduced monthly payment i extended my broadband contract with bt 18 months ago.
the agreed term was for 18 months (agreed over the phone, nothing in writing).
that 18 months is now up, but when i contacted bt to ask for my mac number i was told that the contract term was for 3 years.
this is a blatant lie because i know for a fact the agreed term was 18 months.

i am having no joy argueing my case, the bt customer service department insist i agreed a 3 year contract.
i dont have anything in writing, is there anything i can do?
  • 3 year broadband contracts are only applied to the free laptop deal BT did as a broadband offer. If you had the free laptop from BT then your stuck.
If not then you need to email bt as there are no other 3 year contracts
  • Get them to prove it by listening to the call.

They won't be able to find it so will agree to let you go now if you stick to your guns.

Some mobile operators will let you upgrade your phone even though you are still in a contract period but add the new contract period onto whats left on the existing contract so say 12 month contract after 6 months you call and ask about an upgrade, they agree and say 'its a new 12 month contract OK' and you agree, what you are actually agreeing to is 6 months from the original deal and 12 months on the new deal ,so your contract deal is 18 months....dunno
if this is what BT have done to you, but in general they dont have any contracts for residential customers that are longer that 18 months
