I had the belkin f5d7230 router and it was stable & I was happy, reception was about 1-2 bars, but then I got a netgear 108mbps & that was worse! So I got a linksys one instead and I get 4 bars!! I also purchased the linksys ADSL one (for my nephew)that they had on offer at christmas at pcworld at £40 which included a pcmcia laptop card & again I get four bars. So it seems linksys = better reception.
You can increase the power output via third party firmware (see my earlier post) but since I only got mine last week I can't give any further comments regarding tweaking.0 -
For those who have gut to play around with 3rd party firmwares (I'll suggest to go for DD-WRT), be very very careful not to 'brick' it
.. I did it once but since it was two day old .. returned it to PC World and got a brand new one.
Here is some information on how to not 'brick' your router:

Misco are doing a 3Com equivalent, though 'g' model (ie 54Mhz - more than fast enough for most people). Includes either one USB or two PCMCIA cards for £49.99.
Although the Linksys is faster on the internal network, for 90% of people who simply share a broadband connection (no more than 8 Meg), 3Com have an excellent build quality and their swap-out warranty and service is fantastic if it ever goes wrong.0 -

I don't understand how this can work. The device is 54G which means it has a maximum of 54 Mb/sec - don't see how an OS could change the theoretical maximum throughputMisco are doing a 3Com equivalent, though 'g' model (ie 54Mhz - more than fast enough for most people). I think most people would prefer to use Linksys than 3com.No links in signatures please.0
