I didn't care however, I just wanted the shiny gold things and to be on my way. Perhaps it might assist the OP however, though I suspect she would need to know the weight\density\displacement of a similar ring.

Stop fighting, children! In the UK, all items described as 'gold', weighing more than 1gm must be hallmarked, and the hallmark will indicate the purity of the gold.

The really funny thing about all of this is that the original post was made back in February so I guess the issue has been sorted one way or the other.
