A question for buyers (especially in Scotland) about which websites you search on

Options
Hi,

Well, pretty much as it says on the tin.

We are currently marketing our property through Re/max but I don't think the property is getting enough exposure and am thinking of changing agents.

So I wanted to ask potential buyers which websites they are more likely to use. Or indeed what other methods of searching for property would you use.

Thanks in advance.

  • various Solicitors Property Centres, agents such as Slater Hogg, Galbraith, Clyde Property, Savills, Rightmove etc.
  • I live in Dundee and have seen a few properties advertised by Remax and their descriptions of where in the city they are actually are, are often way off by several miles. Like this one which is about 2.5miles away approximately. But hey there is a great butcher local to it (I recommend it and a 24 hours Asda is not too far away if you run out of a pint of milk, or bread.)

As for this one, yes there is a primary school literally round the corner, and another not too far away for walking, but as for High Schools, yip you've guessed it, a fair distance away unless you want to go to the fee paying school in the centre of the town.

As for close to public transport, I supposed you could say this is true, as all bus routes leave from the centre of the town and it's a 10 -15 min walk into the centre depending on which bus you want to get and where. Also the national bus station and railway station is within walking distance as long as you don't have too much to carry.

Shopping, a 10 minute walk gets you to Iceland, Farmfoods, and a Tesco Metro so your not stuck for something to eat and there is Abbies, the local wee shoppie ((he's a fantastic guy))

For example, I live on the outskirts of Dundee about a mile or so from the first property example above and, about 3 miles from the City Centre and have often seen my housing estate advertised as a City Centre Property. Erm no.... at peak times it can take 30+ minutes on the bus to get into the town and not much less in the car if you get stuck in traffic.

It can be as little as 10 minutes in the car / bus when it's quiet.

Most properties here are advertised on / in Tayside Solicitors Property Guide along with the usual suspects such as YourMove / Rightmove.

Hope this helps, as I'm certainly not impressed with their creative writing for Dundee Properties.
  • Thanks for your comments. Your approach seems to be along the same as I am doing when looking for property. A call to Re/max this morning, me thinks.

Cheekyweegit, I went to uni in Dundee and had my first job there, so happy (if somewhat hazy) memories of Dundee. I would agree that advertising as city centre and convenient for the Kingsway is pushing it even for estate agents!

    What region are you in?

There are the ASPC/TSPC/GSPC and ESPC websites which give a lot of coverage. This covers the 4 major Scottish cities, and surrounding areas.

    We are in Falkirk.

I was contemplating moving from Re/max to Slater Hogg or Caesar & Howie, or at the very least ensuring that we are on rightmove / yourmove / espc.

    Interesting thread bean counter.

We are also with re max and, for the same reasoning as yourself, are considering moving to a solicitor to get access to a solicitors property centres website.

I have spoken to quite a few people who all state that they wouldn't dream of looking at any other websites :(.....OK, it may be laziness on their part and they are probably not making the most of the available market BUT we have to be realistic ..just wish I had been sensible and decided this when we were putting the house on the market in the first place as I really don't fancy having to get a home report done now..heh ho, more fool me.

I never even look at Remax (Im in Edinburgh) but I always check ESPC.
  • Thanks for all the comments. You confirmed what I thought.

The deed is done - Re-max have been punted and there will be a new bunch to market us from Monday.

  • I am in Falkirk too and really only check Rightmove.I occasionally check ESPC. The problem with Remax in Falkirk is they are only advertising on S1Homes.They stopped using Rightmove in August.
