I'm more fascinated on what vehicle you don't have a sump plug in? Or is it damaged?

I'll second that! surely a good big sump plug is needed to get all the crap out with the oil.
  • That's why you have an oil filter.
  • i use one due to the type of vehicles i service have a sump plug that is totally in accessible, and even if you can get to it theres no way you could catch all the oil as it runs every where all over the sealed belly plate. so i need to use the fluid extractor.
our vehciles are serviced regularly so there isnt the chance for crap to build up in the sump,if there is any then the filter will cath this and will be changed very shortly again, they get done at least 3 times a year, some are ancient and never give any trouble due to bad servicing.
i even use it on my own car as its so much easier and cleaner. and again i service the engine regularly.
if you know how much oil is in the sump then you can compare it against how much you have removed,so if you had 4.5 litres in the sump and you only remove 3.5 then you know you still have another half a litre to come out at least (all depending on how the oil filter is mounted as this will hold some oil too).

each to thier own though. if i didnt need it for work then i wouldnt have one for diy use. i would just remove the sump plug.
    ...work permit granted!
