Price to replace hot water cylinder

Hi
Just been speaking to my father-in-law who had his oil fired central heating boiler serviced today. Whilst he was there the engineer spotted a leak from the hot water cylinder and has quoted my father-in-law £1,000.00 to put in a replacement hot water cylinder and coil. This sounds a little excessive to me (though I have to admit I don't really know)!
My father-in-law is 90 years old and I'm concerned that the engineer may be overcharging. If anyone can tell me if this quote is reasonable or not I'd be very grateful.

Get Three or four quotes from reputable Heating engineers / plumbers, get their opinion as to whether it really needs replacing,
how old is it? is it efficient?, is it vented or unvented, direct or indirect? this you will find out just by talking to them, or answer the bombardment of questions that will soon follow....There are three types of people in this world...those that can count ...and those that can't!
