Hi, Thats where I'm stuck............ She is not in pain constantly which is why duty Dr said to wait til monday but its the fact that when she tries to use her foot she falls and cries so its a problem for her to try and walk on it, which to me means there is still pain there and that maybe its not fully healed enough for her to have had her cast removed!??! And im worried that by waiting til monday she could make it more worse and be in more pain then! I am waiting for GP to call back so intend on being a pian in the bottom now!! Thanks!!

If no joy with the GP, I would phone the fracture clinic and question them, at the very least I would expect to get advice on how to prevent any possible problems getting worse (baring in mind her age and activity) while you wait for GP, What to look out for? Which pain killer to use without risking masking the pain, which could possibly lead to further problems etc. etc.

Big hugs to LO, bless her

Well, again have been told that I will need to wait til monday and to keep giving her paracetomol and anti inflammatries as she is still going through the healing process!!! He said that he cannot comment on the healing time as he has not seen the xrays so cannot determine the severity of the break. He also said that the break is unlikely to get any worse unless she twists it, which if she is not walking on it she cannot do. Also that on monday I would probably be told to keep giving her paracetomol and anti inflammatries for a few weeks!! When I said that I would take her to A+E he said its unlikely they will xray it again as she has already had xrays done this week. I said that the fracture clinic Dr had said that she will not want to use it for a few days but she should certainly try using it after that and would be fine once she knows she can but he said it can take a while for the after pain of a fracture to stop depending on its severity. Fracture clinic Dr did say that if she was not walking on it in 1-2 weeks then to take her back to GP and get her referred. I am not a confrontational person but I think I will visit either A+E or minor injuries first thing in the morning (when its quieter, dont want her sitting there all night again!!) and make a bit of a fuss.

  • Hi, my 18 month old daughter has fractured her tibia and we were told the cast only needed to be on for two weeks and we could remove it ourselves at home - no further xrays needed. After removing it she collapsed in less than 2 hours and another trip to A&E showed the fracture hadn't healed enough for cast to be removed. So back on with full leg plaster of paris cast for another 2 weeks. Am wondering why they said only two weeks now. I didn't question the two professionals before, why would I? They're trained in this right? Have fracture clinic again on Monday and will be insisting on xray after this cast is removed. Will also be writing formal letter of complaint but similarly not for compensation, just to make sure they learn from it so no other child has to go through it.
I knew there was something wrong both when she first did it and again when she collapsed. My daughter slept in the ambulance the first time round and was happy to play with toys in the waiting room the 2nd time round - would not put weight on her leg though, went back to crawling holding leg out to side and straight. I wouldn't take no for an answer. I would take your daughter to another A&E department. Will keep you informed of our daughter's recovery.

Hi, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you all on this...... Well Daughter is now walking! Way hay :j

I called fracture clinic who gave me an appt on the monday afternoon. I was told there by top consultant that it had healed nicely so I got DD out of buggy and sat her on the floor, I showed him how she refuses to use her foot. I placed her blankie on the chair and she used chair to support herself and heaved her self up onto her foot and kept the bad one up in the air.
He agreed it was strange and suggested maybe she had something stuck in her heel, a piece of glass maybe or a thorn!?!?!?!!? I laughed and said NO, I would like another xray to see whats happening with it now. He refused at first, saying it was unnecessary, but I kept on insisting so he said for my piece of mind he would. However after sitting around for hours before and after the xray I got told the fracture is healed completely and as good as new. I asked about physiotherapy but got told she didnt need it as she was young and will just realise one day that she can use it. I was so upset, I felt a failure leaving again, no better off than before. I was told to wait four weeks and if she was still not walking to make another appt. After two weeks of dosing her up on calpol and calprofen she was still no better........... then a family friend told me she had told her BIL about DD injury and the problems and being a physio he offered to take a look. I took her round two days later and he felt she would benefit from some physio so offered to do her leg 4 times a week and we also took her swimming twice a week. She improved her strength alot during the physio, he charted down where her strengths and weaknesses were and gave % on how she was improving. Im sure I could see the differencr but 2 weeks later and still refusing to walk I phoned fracture clinic and got an appt for 3 days time and guess what......... she started walking the day before :D:D:D:D:j:j:j.
I was soooooooo happy and 100% certain the physio and swimming helped.
She was very stumbly for a week or so and only took a few steps at a time but a few weeks later and she was walking evrywhere. She still has a limp, tho very slight now which Im told will adjust itself accordingly! It took 4 weeks and a few days in total for her to start using it again after the cast was removed. She was on calpol and calprofen for a whopping 10 weeks. She has had lots of colds and coughs, conjunctivitus, gastro flu and diahorrea since that she never seems to be off it. Im sure its weakened her immune system . But yes, all is good now. Thanks to everybody for your support and suggestions. I really appreciate it.
As for NHS, I have given over my complaint into the treatment I recieved at the beginning of all this and later on and also a letter from the physio just to state that he felt she needed treatment. I have recieved a reply stating that they are looking into it and will get back to me shortly so I will update you when that letter arrives! Thanks again, your all so wonderful!! :D:D:D:D:D:D
