Any ISPs with Binary Newsgroups?

Now that Zen are stopping their Newsgroups service I can no longer justify the cost of staying with them. (They are expensive but one of the best ISPs around)

I guess I have 2 options.......

1. Go for another ISP with Newsgroup access (are there any?)

2. Go for an ISP with a high / unthrottled download allowance and pay separately for Newsgroups.

Any advice appreciated.

Can't you just access newsgroups through the web, e.g. using Google Groups: http://groups.google.com

Most groups have a good web forum version... unless it is something very strange! Usenet groups are dying out, I haven't used them for about 12 years now.

Zen wins everytime for me, service and quality is impeccable.

    I assume it's to download Linux ISO's ;)
  • I think (and cba checking) BT still offer a binary feed...limited to 3 connections.
o2 definately don't have a server, I think sky are the same..but if they are available to you (LLU) then adding a giganews or whatever sub on top of the isp rate can still be cheaper than zen...and being adsl2+ faster ;)

    Mainly US TV actually.........

Newsgroups, the binary sort, are booming which is why Zen are stopping their service. The cost of upgrading their storage must outweigh the cost of losing a few customers?

A cheaper way might be to use an american proxy for one offs.

However if you are these you could do worse by going to this http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html (it has been advertised as a limited special for months!) and is $11 for unlimmited usage and for life I believe.

I moved from Newshosting to the above and have no regrets

the throughput is good. With all the isp monitoring that goes on ssl is a must these days too.
GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)
  • My exchange is not LLU as yet so that restricts my options somewhat.

I still use Giganews. $30 a month for diamond but worth it for me.

I'm fairly sure that talking about Newsgroups falls foul of the forum rules, especially when it's to infringe on copyright ;)

That looks very interesting. What is the retention / completion like?
  • Pretty much all ISPs have either dumped binary usenet altogether, or provide a very limited service with short retention periods, few simultaneous connections and unreliable syndication. Most peer-to-peer traffic has gone over to bittorrent, but if you're a usenet loyalist there are tons of companies providing usenet as a paid service, like newshosting.com or altbinaries.com. You are looking at $15 a month (about a tenner) for unlimited service, which should give you some idea as to why ISPs are dumping binaries - it's not a cheap service to provide. Personally, usenet seems about as relevant as gopher, but each to their own.
