amit, get the pc3200 ddr instead, it's cheaper, and faster for if you overclock. It will run at 400fsb+
it depends on your FSB. you can use faster memory , but not slower
Crucial is good quality, a good price.
You can get comparable own brand for a bit less, but I don't think you'll get a better deal on good memory
I've checked ebay etc, but ordered these crucial today

    use the crucial tool.
if for any reason what so ever , within 28 days , you are not happy with it, you can return it for a full refund.
Unless your a dim-wit like myself and cannot work out what system you got as its shop built and got no info on it :o

It basically means (IIRC) that it's advised that you run with 2 identicals pair of memory sticks for best performance possible,

At the moment your PC has TWO 256MB DDR PC2700 x2 meanign it's a pair.

If you can removed one of the memory sticks and still book up your system, then you'll be fine to get and 1x1GB stick but it's no point in stickign the old 256MB sticks in as well since it will only run at the lower speed.

    See http://www.crucial.com/uk/pvtcontent/memorytype.asp?model=&memtype=CHOOSE

    Hope that makes sense!

I presume people are being tempted to put in 2 orders for 512Mb of PC RAM in order to get 2 USB memory sticks... but as per the above post in theory you are better off buying a matched pair of memory sticks. However, you will notice that you have 2 USB memory sticks instead of one - but will you notice you have 2 unmatched PC memoery sticks?

My wonder is - I currently have 2x256Mb of RAM at a slower speed than the crucial memory I am thinking of buying (2x512Mb - DDR2 PC2-4200 • CL=4 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR2-533 • 1.8V • 64Meg x 64). I wonder whether I am better with 1.5Gb of ram at slower speed or removing the 2x256Mb RAM and having 1Gb of ram at higher speed (as I can have 4 lots memory)

again the answer for searcher (afaik) it depends on what FSB you run your system at.
if your FSB is 400mhz, then you need pc3200 ram to keep up, but faster ram will make no difference in performance
thePOST screen or bios or sytem information will tell you your current FSB

    Perhaps someone can answer this;
My mobo is dual channel memory, with 3 memory slots
If I have 256meg ram already, and I buy one 256 and one 512 sticks, will I get the best performance? or do they have to be 2x512 matched pair?

Alric - thanks - I've been having a look for a FSB in the BIOS. The only speeds I found were the Processor Bus Speed which is 800Mhz and the speed of the existing memory which is 400Mhz. Is the FSB 800Mhz then? I've looked in the System/Hardware section but can't find reference to the FSB their either.... and I don't know what a POST screen is! A little knowledge is dangerous - and I have a little knowledge.
