There are a lot of tall stories around about Paypal.

The scare stories say it is not secure but I don't agree with this. You hear the same stories about on-line banking, but the majority of it is down to users not adequately protecting their security details.

It does cost the seller, but it's a small price to pay given it's major advantages, e.g. instant payment clearance, the ability to accept credit cards etc. I just couldn't imagine operating on EBay without it.
  • Hintza, I would stick to your guns on this one. I would probably e mail the guy and thank him nicely for his e mail but point out that before he won the item the ebay pages would have reminded him several times that his bid was binding, also as it was a BIN he would have had to click twice to accept and buy the item.

Tell him that ebay do not have the option for a confirmed buyer to opt out of purchase and that you will therefore follow the normal ebay practice and reclaim your fees on the basis that he is a non paying bidder.

Mention as well the three strikes and you are out bit so he knows how serious it actually is.

Good luck. I know everyone needs to learn the ropes but if he can't manage something as simple as confirming a buy on a BIN auction he probably doesn't belong on ebay.

its 4 strikers...you have to get to -4...though the record is -96...ebay are crap on security...problem is ebay dont seem to care...long term this could be their downfall...yes they are a big company and the pluses outweight the minuses but there are too many low lifes on ebay

I didn't mean the feedback scores I was talking about non paying bidder strikes. A buyer needs only get three lots of FVFs claimed against his acocunt before the account is closed. It is automatic and doesn't have anything to do with the feedback.

That's why I get a bit irritated when I get a buyer with lots of negs for non payment, it means the previous sellers haven't gone through the NPB process. If every seller automatically reclaimed their final value fees a lot more of the bad buyers would disappear.

Interesting its now 5 days since auction.

Three people promised cheques (including the one above) out of 18 buyers and none have paid. Have sent out a gentle e-mail asking if there is a problem.

If they are not here by Tuesday or they have not contacted me think its time to take action.

The worst part of it all is not the money........it is the hassle factor. I have never sold so much in EBay at one time and I have not got my systems in place to deal with it.

This is a steep learning curve.

    Ah yes, those old chestnuts:

"The cheque's in the post" ;)
"I posted a cheque last week, did you not get it? I'll send another..." ;)

The fun of it all. >:(

it was a BIN auction for 22 items.

22 items - sounds like a business transaction. In which case the Distance Selling regulations apply and the buyer can cancel.

I don't like the uncertainty of cheques, they are so much hassle. I had one arrive yesterday morning post marked 6th December and sent first class which I think is very slow.

I have acknowledged it and the buyer sounds OK but has asked whether I could possibly send the item out this week as she needs it for the weekend. I don't usually wait for cheques to show as cleared funds before I post but I'm not so sure now I have had a couple of problems with cheques in the past few weeks.

I'm also concerned as this buyer has left 2 neutrals before for 'slow posting' and although this is not on my primary selling account, I still don't want to risk a neutral because the post office can't get my post to me in a timely fashion. I will probably take the risk and send it tomorrow on the same day I actually bank the cheque.

I am thinking though of emailing the buyer and saying that I am happy on this occasion to post the item immediately but in future she might want to consider paypal as most sellers will post out immediately they receive a paypal payment and in her case that means the item would have been posted last Monday morning.
