Following is a reply I got from Sky:
Thank you for contacting Sky Help Centre.
[FONT=Verdana, Tahoma, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Our Sky Broadband Email Server suffered a failure on 25/02/09, which would be the cause of your problems accessing emails.
I apologise for the inconvenience this failure has caused. The server issue is being treated as priority and we hope this is resolved soon.
Please note you can access your emails in sky.com.
We would recommend you include an alternative email address, we can write back to you on.
Alternatively, for more immediate assistance, please call Broadband Technical Support on 08442 41 05 15.
However, I would suggest you use the googlemail suggestion referred to above - it worked for me!
In Outlook Express - Click in order - Tools, Accounts, Properties, Servers. Then for both incoming and outgoing mail delete 'tools.sky' and insert 'googlemail'.
Since this is my first post, I especially hope it helps you stop crying - I know the feeling!

What Antivirus have you got installed, I ask this because AVG will sometimes need configuring again after an update (its rare but can happen)

Hi,
this should be straightforward, so try this:
Change your settings to these appear to make it work.
go to tools, then Accounts, go to mail tab, then click on properties.
click on servers tab (please ensure you write down your existing skys servers in case this doesn't work) and change the incoming and outgoing servers to below.
pop.googlemail.com
smtp.googlemail.com0
