Missed payment by 1 day

Howdy,

Made a payment on 16th Feb, amount was due on 17th.

Missed a payment by 1 day (takes 2 days to process) but covered the whole amount due. £100 interest applied and when I rang today MBNA informed me that interest is now due on top of the £100.

Clearing the whole amount tomorrow including 'estimated interest' up to my next bill date.

Would a DD for the minimum amount prevented any interest incurring?

  • No it wouldn't prevent interest being added as you would still pay interest on the outstanding amount but it would prevent any punitive charges for late payment being added.

  • You are of course correct. I will change my "yes" to "No" I was thinking of the fact that it would make sure you would not get a late payment charge.

  • What would be my tact if I was to ring MBNA retentions and tell them of my intent to leave.

I can do this before clearing the balance or after - which ever would benefit me most. My intention would be to try and get the interest back if at all possible, otherwise I can cut my losses and jump ship.

If its the first time just phone up and say that you're really unhappy about the way this has been handled given your previous history and ask whether the interest can be refunded.

I wouldn't go in there guns blazing & expecting anything. You've made the mistake by not paying on time, so its not as though they've made a mistake.
  • Had a similar event last November - after using MBNA as our main cards for six years and never missing a payment, I missed the payment by a day and got socked with a late payment fee and interest. I phoned and wrote them a letter requesting that they void the charges on the grounds that we were good customers they should value. The response was a form letter and absolute squat. So we made good on our threat - cancelled three MBNA cards (my main, partner's main, and a life-of-balance). For the sake of £20 and their principles they are losing out hundreds of pounds. I don't miss the sons of !!!!!es at all either, I'm still getting regular phone calls from them offering me deals on my cards three months after the cards were cancelled.

Silly thing to do; it's quite possibly you who will be losing out by hundreds of pounds. MBNA's BT offers are renowned for their profit potential. Never mind hundreds of pounds, I've made many thousands of pounds out of them over the years.

Day, hour, minute, century, -doesn't matter- you broke your agreement. Simple.

Phone again and be very nice and see if they can look at the charges again.

Most cc co's are looking to shrink their customers numbers and so I agree with others that I think they won't be bothered.

I would suggest you look at the bigger picture. Overall has this CC more pluses then minuses? Then make a decision.

    No CC is perfect.
