water metre

we moved last june from Bristol to Bridgwater & were informed by wessex water that we HAD to have a water metre installed , it wasnt optional , we have now had 2 bills which prove much higher than before , as there are 5 of us in the house water useage is quite high , we are trying to find out if this meter is compulsory or not . Our D /D uesd to be £ 58 pcm its now going to go up to £ 80 !! , does anyone know where we stand on this ?

    Yes, it is compulsory if that is what the Water company want.

    The intent of the Water privatisation bill was that eventually everyone would be metered and pay for what they use and thus conserve water.

    Existing customers could choose a meter or remain unmetered, but all new occupants should have a meter fitted.

    The problem has been that some Water companies have enforced the 'meter fitted on new occupancy' regulation 100% but other companies haven't.

    There is a thread currently running where Thames Water have just started to enforce that regulation.

    So the short answer is it is not optional - a meter will be fitted.
