What is this credit card protection for goods over £100?

I've never given much thought to this but I've been reading lots of posts on here along the lines of "contact your credit company".
What does it actually cover?
Is it the same for VISA/Mastercard/AMEX?
Does it differ according to the card provider?

I think it refers to the Consumer Credit Act ? If not someone will correct me.
There is a section about the credit card issuer being "jointly and severally liable" (???) for products over £100.
If you have a problem with faulty goods, and the seller will not refund or has gone bust, then you can claim the refund from the credit card company.

Some card issuers offer voluntary protection above this, and if you have problems with goods supplied, talk to them. They will tell you precisely what you can do. Some of the rules differ with Visa & Mastercard too, just to add confusion.
Hope you rarely need to take advantage of this bit of statute.
