How Long Does The Dvla Keep Motoring/speeding Offence Records On Their Files?

I guess this is relation to your other post. One would have thought these things would be recorded until the end of time.
I would also be interested in knowing the answer to this question.0 -
IIRC they keep it on record pretty much forever (or until they lose the paperwork*), but it's only used for consideration with most offences for 3 years for totting up, but some serious offences can be taken into consideration for much longer when it comes to court, or if it shows a repeated pattern of offending.
I think one of the exceptions is drink driving, where they take it into consideration in the event of further DD offences for something like 5-10 years.
*not so likely with computers:p0 -

Hi yes it is in relation to my other post....I will be writing to DVLA via Freedom of information and data protection act so will get back to you once I find out
#thanks0 -

Hi Nilrem, sorry to sound thick but what is a IIRC? Is that a paper document?
thanks0 -
I've seen some driving licence records that contain pretty old endorsements. I can't recall how old they were, however, so don't know if they are removed after a certain period. I would be interested to know, though.0

I really wouldnt bother wasting a tenner on finding this out, as Im sure a quick phonecall to Swansea will tell you all you need to know. Unless of course youre looking for specific info about your endorsements. Though eben then, they should tell you over the phone.
Generally speaking though, endorsements only last 3 years for totting up purposes, you can then apply to have them physically removed from your licence after four years, but they stay effective for insurance purposes for 5 years.
As for keeping a permanent record of them, I dont see what it matters. Its not like youre gonna get 3 points for something, only to find the DVLA drag out an old endorsement from years ago to try and take your licence. Unless Im missing something.0 -
Hi how long does the DVLA keep motoring / speeding offences on their files (both computer and any manual filing systems?)
They are kept on record as long as you are alive !! Seriously, people are saying 5 - 10 years. This is how long they are valid for dependant on offence etc.'' A man who defends himself, has a fool for a client''0 -
Hi I emailed the DVLA yesterday with my query it cost nothing under the freedom of information act and here was the response....
Thank you for your e-mail of 25 February asking for information under
the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act. The information you
require is freely available and this is being answered as "Business as
usual."
Endorsements remain on a driving licence (and DVLA's computer records)
for:
11 years from the date of conviction for offences relating to
drink/drugs and driving, causing death by careless driving whilst uinder
the influence of drink/drugs and causing death by careless driving then
failing to provide a specimen for analysis.
4 years from date of conviction for reckless/dangerous driving and
offences resulting in disqualification.
4 years from the date of offence in all other cases.
After this time, the spent endorsements are deleted from DVLA's
computer records. DVLA does not hold any manual paper records of
motoring offences.
Yours sincerely
