Is there a cheap way to sail to America?

Hi everyone,
I'm going on holiday to America this year and I'm looking for a cheap way to get there by the ocean.
I'm not a big fan of flying. I don't really want a cruise ship. Are there still any passenger liners or anything?
Thanks

As far as im aware there is just:
www.cunard.com
I have heard you can get on cargo ships too? But not 100% on that.
However, and im not trying to patronise you but have you tried something like this:
http://flyingwithoutfear.co.uk/
I personally cannot comment on how good it is since i have never had to overcome a fear of flying, but i have heard very good thing about it.0 -
No.
It is possible to cross the Atlantic by sea, but even on a freighter this costs more than a business-class flight with a well-known airline.
So your options are: get yourself a big budget; make friends with the skipper of a yacht who fancies the journey; or choose somewhere more convenient for your holiday. Or learn to tolerate a few hours stuck in a metal tube.0 -
Thanks for the quick responses. That cunard site has a fairly reasonable offer. Think I'll opt for that.0

When you want to go?
Cruise ships are the cheapest from £250 sometimes a bit less.
QM2 is the regular passage this is from around £500-£1k takes 6 days
Shop around there are deals
Twice a year the regular cruise ships do a crossings and this starts at around £250. loads are doing it so there is a lot of choice for date/price but many need you to get to the med ports
A lot of people that live in Florida for the winter take the ships over in the autumn and back in the spring, Cheaper than flying.
Friend are coming back from Miami to Dover in April for $365pp takes 11 nights.
For non cruise ship they tend to be long and not cheap there is a site I cannot remember, google found this no idea if it is any good

I'm not sure if Serious is being serious about making friends with a skipper or if it was said tongue-in-cheek but
There is a sailing club on the docks here in Liverpool, i suppose there are similar places at most coastal towns, they have cards up there asking for people who are interested in joining in as crew members for all sorts of trips.
Some may only be as far as Wales; others Europe; but sometimes World wide. It could be a cheap and exciting option.
I had a go once, destination............up and down The Mersey.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

No, i have got a racing dinghy i go out in that but i'm not daft i only go on lakes.
When i'm racing you can always tell which one is me, on a good day i'm the one at the back, but most of the time i spend waving for help with the boat upside down.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Please let us know who does crossings for £250. Thanks.

£250 might be a little light at the moment, but not by much.
Crown Princess is sailing from Florida to Lisbon in April. 9 days, prices from $399. So around £280.
Norwegian Jewel is sailing from Florida to Dover, again in April. 11 days, prices from $449 - about £315. That's an ocean view cabin, not even an inside.
