Hi all
It has been a while since I lasted posted on here by I still have my Ford Mondeo V6 Auto and she is running like a dream, had to spend quite alot on her the past few months to keep her serviced and in good running order.
One big problem has come up though!.....
The MOT on her runs out in 2 months, when I brought the car the guy said that the front wheel blew out going along the motorway but the car was stopped instantly.
He said that the ABS sensor on that wheel had shock and caused the wire to break, I had the car looked over by Ford and they said the wire was broke, I left it because the new ABS sensor is going to cost £145 + VAT not including fitting.
One problem now, I know its an MOT failure to have the ABS light on which it is and also the traction control light stays on too, and it wont let you turn Traction on or off.
However, Im worried now, the past few days since I have been driving the car 100s of miles up and down the motorway the ABS light and Traction control lights go off but then when you apply the breaks come back on and stay on till the next day, Im worried that maybe the guy broke the ABS wire to cover a major ABS failure
Could this be the case?
Because if the lights were on because of the broken ABS sensor wire to that wheel then why:
1) Why is the Traction control light on?
2) Why are both the lights going off at times when the engine is running?
Ford have already told me to be prepared to spend at least £400 to get her through the MOT, thats with fitting a new ABS sensor, re setting the computer fault code, fitting a new handbrake cable and one new two new brake discs (Possibly) depending on what there like when it goes in for test.
Thing is, if I get all this work done, which Im having done by Ford, if the lights stay on the car will fail its MOT and Id have spent all that money.
Before anyone says get rid of her, noway, she is very clean, the most cleaniest Ford Mondeo 2.5 V6 Auto Ghia X that you'll ever find, the engine turns on the key and she has hell of alot of power and low miles plus shes had loads of money already spent on her.
Any ideals how I can find out for sure if it is that broken wire that is causing the ABS and Tarction control light to stay on?
Can Ford put it on a computer to find this out?
Also because my bill is going to be so high, does anyone know if Ford will allow me to set an account up with them to repay instalements? I know Im maybe dreaming here but with the way of the world at the moment its alot to pay out at once.
All advice welcome please
Thank you

Why go to Ford?
Have you tried an independent garage, which will be considerably cheaper - I know this from experience!
Get quotes from other garages and compare them?
A ford dealer will charge something like £70 per hour for labour, where an independent will charge something like £30-£40 per hour. Thats a small saving already!
I find the quote of atleast £400 a bit steep for those things that need sorted. Its the typical Ford main [strike]stealers[/strike] dealers usual cr*p of telling you that you need various things sorted, complete with a massive bill. My advice, take it somewere else. An independent garage will be able to source and fit genuine Ford parts anyway.
Cant really answer you technical questions, as car mechanics arent my strong point.
Hope that helps?“Hardware: The parts of a computer system that can be thrown out of the nearest window!”0 -

Yes tried going round other places for prices but all have them said that the ABS sensor is only a genuine Ford part and there is no other brand, so the ABS sensor is £125 + VAT on its own.
There charging me £78 + VAT an hour, the other places near me who charge £45 + VAT an hour dont have the computer to reset the fault code and Ford are going to reset it within the price of the hours labour as other places want just £35 on top for resetting it.
Want the car done at Ford, I dont trust anywhere else, the engine is sound, these kids working in some of these places would love to take my V6 Mondeo out on there lunchbreak, no chance!
I be waiting at Ford while the work is carried out and they are going to give me 6 months warrenty on the parts unlike most other places.
Main dealer for me, thanks for the advice though0 -
Hi
What I tend to do mate is find out what part is needed.. if its a new ABS Sensor then start looking for one. Ebay is a good place, plenty of these modeos being broken find out which mondeo have same ones on.. but also google breaker yard, or part finder.... these services basicly fin the part for you normally second hand and they come at the fraction of the cost plus they normally have 30 days warranty.
Next find a good pricate gargage that will fit the part for you, also get it Mot'd byt them as they tend to be more understanding and happy to tweak with the car to rather than just failing it if they fitted the part.
Example is I needed a mass airflow meter, vauxhall dealer wanted approx 400.00 fitted, I bought the part of ebayfor £30.00 and my friend (mechnic) fitted it in 2 mins all together £50.00
Also if you join a ford forum online, normally free. Post the question people normally v.happy to give advice.
hope this helps0 -

I have a secondhand Ford Mondeo ABS sensor for the correct wheel side and year however Ford wont fit it, I cant take it else where because the time they fit it at £45 + VAT an hour and then they cant reset the fault code, back to Ford, theyll charge £32 + VAT to reset it, and the secondhand ABS sensor might be no good and I would have wasted over £100 already, hence reason not going to do that now, was going to though, thnak you for your ideal.
I really dont trust anywhere else but main dealer, my last car, a automatic Honda Civic has a blown headgasket when I went back to get the car after a service with K*** F** If everyone knows who im on about.
I be going to main dealer, I know might pay a little more but rather that than a Mondeo auto V6 with low miles and with a engine that turns over like a needle go to someone who could damage it.0 -
Have to agree with the above replies here
Indepdent garage all the way, a lot cheaper and a lot of garages do have the software equipment to reset the codes once the abs sensors have been fitted
Just need to make a few calls around some garages in your area
I used to be a member of ford mondeo org forum when I had a mondeo a few years ago, you should do a search there on the faults you describe as theres loads of people on there will the knowledge and they you will get good advise and it could save you a fair few pounds before you go the dealer route"One Man Can Make A difference" Michael Knight KNIGHTRIDER0 -
I would assume that readings from the abs sensor are used as part of the traction control system, with a broken wire neither the abs or traction control will work, so thats why you get the lights
You should really get your abs fixed, its well worth it
Try sourcing a second hand part from ebay, they cant be that hard to fit, worth it as an experirment0 -

I doubt it unless you have a trade account I would have thought?"One Man Can Make A difference" Michael Knight KNIGHTRIDER0
