    Hi!
My top favourite buys from Aldi are:
Baron Jean RED wine: pleasant easy on the palate and not vinegar/sharp as you would expect an under £3 bottle of French wine to be!!
Frikadellen: superb for breakfast lightly grilled, they're like a herby burger also good in a bun with Tom Sauce and a slice of cheese. Tip: slice in half as their too thick (for me), then they go twice as far!
Baked Beans: good value and I now prefer them to ANY brand
    Tinned Tomatoes: as above
Cheeses: most of them are excellent (keep Cheddar type out of the fridge for a couple of hours before eating)!
Tomato Ketchup: Bramwells as good as anywhere else if not better and cheaper
    Plenty more!
  • I have only just started going to Lidl around here (quite a drive). I've seen Lidl inother cities and been impressed. But my favourites at the moment seem to be:

Pork Frikadellan (I wouldn't touch the chicken or turkey based ones) which are fab cooked with a dab of peanut butter, chilli powder and a ham stock cube - serve with rice. MMMmmmm !!

Any quality German chocolate - yumm

    Any German sausage products

Fruit based multivit drinks - fabulous.

I unfortunately still need to visit Tesco occasionally for things like brown bread (can't seem to get any hight quality brown bread at Lidl or Aldi - but the Tesco price for this has shot up recently  )
[ Eat, Drink and be Merry - for tomorrow we get the bill ]
  • Favourites at Lidl:

Lasagne (bakes to a lovely brown top and looks really well, nearest to homemade I've tasted)
Pianola yougurts (8 pack) These are always so fresh tasting and fruity, plus 0% fat.
Mature Cheddar Cheese, Lovely same a premium brand also regularly reduced in the Lidl food sales.
Luxury Salmon with Sauce and Ordinary without sauce. I like the portion here, just enough for 2.
Cod in Breadcrumb (cheaper one is fine 5-6 pieces in each pack)
Oven Chips Golden Harvest 5% Sunflower Oil (nice with fish) and Chunky (great with steaks)
    Jaffa Cakes and Cherry Cakes
    Lidl ground coffee 500g
    Lidl Instant Gold Decaf 100g
Lidl Jams Blackcurrant, Strawberry, Raspberrry and Lime Marmalade
    Lidl Cat Food Coshida
    Lidl Washing Powder
Supreme Pizza twin pack (Salami, Ham and Mushroom)
    12 MultiVit Juice 1.5L
    Easi Cook Rice

    Aldi
Aldi Lacura Moisturising Shower Cream (similar to Dove at a fraction of the price)
    Excite Deodorant
    Wine Gums
    Sliced Ham
Bramwells Extra Light Mayo just 5-10% fat
Aldi Cook in Sauces, Rogan Josh, Chilli, Tikka, Sweet and Sour all excellent and great value.

My visits to Lidl are usually flying ones, but today I had a good look round

4 chicken legs £1.35 - breast fillets also cheap
Mascara £1.25 - tried it when I got home, seems fine
Bargain of the lot - sport shower gel 13p for 300ml - my son regularly leaves his shower gel at school or football and even the expensive stuff he uses by the gallon
Good range of more unusual veg, squash, sweet potatoes, aubergines

Noticed next week 1kg gammon joint for £2.99

I like proper pilsner lager preferably brewed in Germany and I have found that the Perlenbacker Premium Pils sold by Lidl is an extremely nice Pils at a very good price.
From the label it appears to be brewed in Germany specially for Lidl.

It's normally £5.89 for 6 x 500ml bottles but was on special offer yesterday for £3.99. The girl on the till thought it would probably be at that price until Sunday, so if you like good lager it's well worth picking up a few packs.
  • i am writing to thank you for your help gluten free products we are not pushed in a corner like other supermarkets keep up the good work Please send me a gluten free list

Dropped into Lidl yesterday and I was gutted that they had none of their jars of roasted red peppers. I loved them :(

They also had hardly any bread left, although they did have apples which were freakishly large - I didn't buy any because you'd probably only get 3 per kg!
    Looking forward to the future.

I have now been working for Aldi for a number of months and I can honestly say I have never worked for a firm that treats it's staff so badly as Aldi. We regularly work 10 -12 hour shifts with only a 15 minute break IF we're lucky. AND we are expected to start 15 mins before our shift starts and stay behind, sometimes for up to an hour UNPAID, to clean the shop at the end of the night. The bare min of staff are employed thats why the ques are so long at the till and if you look at your weekly shopping bill there will be a number of subtotals on it because the till is on a timer and the only way to stop it is to press the subtotal!! That's also the reason why your stuff gets thrown through the till and you're ezpected to catch it the other end. If you're caught taking a well earned breather at any time your given something to do, none of the staff know each other because no one has time to talk to anyone else let a alone form a sense of "team".

No, before anyone asks we can't do anything about it only "approach our employers" about the breaks, like yeah we're gonna do that in this economic climate.

So folks next time you're shopping for bargains please choose a supermarket that looks after it's staff rather than treating them like slaves from the dark ages! Yes they are a European employer but bet the Germans don't work these sort of hours without their breaks.

Spend a little S**g your employees up the jacksy a lot!
  • Are you able to look for another job? They are few and far between at the mo, but if I was that unhappy I'd be looking frantically.

But I will still be shopping there for my food. If I stopped shopping everywhere there were unhappy staff, I would be very limited.

I love my aldi's for shopping.

You are legally entitled to your breaks.

Just take your legal breaks, no matter what they say. There is nothing they can do about it. Any possible repercussions from management are in breach of existing employment law and may well give you a case of (constructive) unfair dismissal.

They also have no legal leg to stand on when it comes to unpaid labour through unpaid overtime. Economic climate or not, it's not that easy to sack somebody who has the law behind him. Maybe give ACAS a ring.

There are companies out there (and from what one hears, the two German discounters are among the worst) who systematically create a work culture in which employees are deliberately pushed into forfeiting their legal rights. But there is no way they can make anybody go along with that. In such contexts, "gievance procedure", "tribunal" and "constructive dismissal" can be magic words. Your popularity may plummet very noticeably, but sacking is not a legal option. They may well look for other reasons to get rid of you, but as long as you cover your back, you're safe.
