If when you logged into paypal it said the item was 'OK to post' and you sent to the address that paypal gave you then you will be fine. To stop a claim for item not received you need a signature at receipt that can be viewed online (that is due to item being over £150). You say you sent it recorded and that actually isn't possible to Hawaii , but assuming it was tracked to the point of delivery and a signature viewable online it will be OK.

  • i sent it to the confirmed address shown by paypal.

once it arrives in america i cannot trace it online with the tracking number as it says it has been passed to american customs, but i assume the postal service in the US can track it from then on?!

Not necessarily and paypal do not recommend this for people using their service as there is a very good chance that once it leaves the UK it disappears. If the US post do not put a signature online (and would you even know where to look?) then you would automatically lose any claim for item not received.

Even if the UK recorded would nto cover you for an item of this value.

Sorry to be bringer of bad news. However, if buyer is genuine and item arrives then you'll have no problems. My only concern here is still the fact that offering more money that requested is usually a sign of the advance payment scam.

AS per Fay in post 3, google 'advance fee fraud' although yours is not a typical scenario.
