I had my loft done in January, with grant (i'm not on benefits) it cost me £125. I will dig out their contact details.0

Found it quicker than I thought! I can recommend them, I originally went through British Gas and these were who British Gas use, except I cancelled with BG and went direct as it was cheaper :-)

Had the loft insulation added to recently (an extra 10") cost me £107 via Powergen Over Sixties. (not on benefits)....saw the bill, which I had to sign , it was £288.
So...£530 looks right for cavity and loft.
...and this site is all about shopping round.0 -
How big is your house, if you don't mind me asking?
Mine is a three bed detached - but not a big house, normal sized rooms and a box room for the 3rd bedroom, you know the sort.

As mentioned in an earlier post, use the energy saving trust website to search for a grant. Make a list of the energy suppliers offering grants.
I called Scottish Power about their grants (this was last week). They seemed to have the best grants at that time. The advantage is, you don't have to be a customer to claim the grants (I was told this by the representative from Scottish power on the phone). So give a call to all the companies you list and see who offers the best grant.
I called about cavity wall insulation, but turns out I already had it which was good.
Scottish power link is: http://www.scottishpower.co.uk/energyefficiency
Hope this helps.0 -

3 bed Semi, Duncan, roughly 10paces by 8paces, excluding a long extension which wasn't done.If you're gonna do it yourself, Wickes (and perhaps others) are doing a 3forthe price of 2. You're getting there...:-)0 -
3 for price of 2 sounds my kind of thing!
So, how much is 1? How big would 1 be?
'Just go and visit Wickes!!!!' You're probably thinking........
Thanks.

Do it all have a three for two offer, the local Wickes does not but the insulation is a bit cheaper there.
A 100mm (4in) roll which covers 10sqm costs £10.98. The 170mm rolls are slightly more expensive but only cover about 5sqm.
The dimensions for the 100mmm roll are: 1160*9170*100mm. It splits into three for laying between the rafters or you can cross lay it without splitting if you are topping up .That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Hi I have just used 6 rolls of Wickes 170mm insulation to top up my loft insulation, total £71.94. It took two trips in the car to get it home and a day to lay, half in the original loft and half in the extension. We can feel the difference already. Don't forget to cover the hatch with some insulation and seal the hatch with insulating tape.0

I'm planning on taking a day off work, packing the kids off to their grandparents and devoting the whole day to sorting this (with the wife's help).
Should be enough time then you think?
I'm actualy starting to feel more confident that I can do this myself and not have to pay someone else.
Just hope it doesn't all end in tears!?!?!?
