Loft insulation (merged threads)

Hi,

On the utilities thread I seem to have decided that my gas bills are so high partly because my loft is badly insulated.

Is this something I can rectify myself or would I have to get someone in?

I'd imagine it just involved buying a load of the foam/felt whatever it is, and laying it down in the loft?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Duncan

  • You might qualify for a grant or partly subsidised loft insulation, have a look at the energy savings trust website

    Hello duncan32

I'll move your thread over to the 'In my home' board, where you should get more helpful posts like the one by aussielle.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. hi duncan, loft insulating is pretty straight forward to lay.but be warned.this stuff is lethal.if you do it yourself make sure you protect yourself from head to toe.urgggh i can still feel the stuff grinding in my teeth.good luck
  • Thanks everyone.

I've printed out a page about the grants, so when I get a quote on the loft insulation (and possibly the wall too), I'll see how it compares to doing it myself (don't fancy that actually!!))

Whilst more expensive you can get rolls of insulation in foil/polythene liners, minimal mess and a lot less hassle than traditional rolls. Depends whether the extra cash is worth it.

I topped up ours this year to the 250 mm building regs
requirement. Wickes were/are doing a buy 2 get 1 free on rolls which is a BG promotion link.

Cost was half that of getting someone in to do it.
Nasty job but we notice the difference.

One thing i didnt expect was that the level of condensation inside the loft increased considerably. This meant i had to increase ventilation by putting in soffit vents.

Another cheap DIY job but something to be aware of.

I've been in touch with the local council, who are offering 50% dicounts on roof and wall insulation. So, will see what they quote and come back on here to get some opinions if that's ok?

The more I think about it the less I want to do it myself - a 6 months boy and 4 year old girl, just to much mess with them around......

I redid my loft last year, i wore a old tracksuit and a face mask

However this is what i did went up removed all stuff from up loft, had to make a couple of small wooden boxes to cover the halogen lights in the ceiling below, then went poundland and purchased some plastic sheeting the stuff you stick down on the floor when painting, purchased my loft insulation from the local diy shack.

Measured up the loft spaces and on a dry day outside i cut the insulation then wrapped it once in the plastic sheeting cutting the spare off for the next piece of lost insul etc and using a bit of double sided tape but leaving the ends open, went up the loft with the dyson and vacuumed the loft, then put the insulation down , and now i can go up the loft and come down without all of the itching.

Sounds like a job for Superman!

Well done to you for doing that. Appreciate your help, but I think I will wait to see the cost from the council then decide .....

    Hello,

Well, I have been quoted £530 from the Council people - to do the walls and the loft.

I must say, this doesn't sound like a reduced price to me!!?!?

I am now seriously considering just going for the roof insulation and attempting to do it myself.

I am hoping / assuming that the worst of the heat loss if through the roof and that the walls will be ok as they are?

Does this sound a lot of money?

Xbon - so, are you saying that you cut the insulation to the required sizes and then wrapped it in the poly sheets before taking it into the house? Can it then stay in these sheets in the loft?

    Thanks in advance.
