Changing from USB to ETHERNET - CABLE NTL BROADBAND

If you are using standard crossover cable don't bother getting new straight through cable. Just phone up NTL and ask them to send you an RJ45 crossover convertor.
To check if you have crossover cable do the following:
Hold the RJ45 connectors (ends of the cable) side by side and look at them from the bottom (the clip away from you) and look at the colours of the small cables connected to each pin. The pins you are interested in are (from left to right) 1 & 2 and 3 & 6. If they are the same either end then it is a straight through cable, if pin 1 (usually orange & white) is connected to pin 3 at the other end and 2 is connected to pin 6 (and vice versa) then you have a crossover cable - basically if the order of colours is the same for each connector it's a straight through, if the orders of the colours is different it's crossover.0 -
Are you just trying to get your laptop working, or do you have more than one PC?0

My cable went from the cable modem into the Ethernet port on my motherboard, then I got a router and the Ethernet cable went from the modem into my router.
Then from the router com port into my computer, everything was set up via the software.
Just connect your cables and let the software do its job, the settings have just be configured for the usb cable and not the Ethernet port.
Or the Ethernet port on your laptop may need the drivers installing to activate the Ethernet port to allow internet connection.I'm not poor i'm just skint0 -
Im fascinated by this post - I have had exactly the same experience trying to connect my ntl broadband via ethernet! I gave up in the end and put a wireless usb adaptor onto the pc, even though it is right next to the modem! But I didnt know about crossover and straight through cables - going to check the colours in mine!
Thanks for all the useful info guys!

USB is handy, but its limits the data transfer more than via Ethernet.
NTL and Blueyonder people are getting/got speed increases.....the USB port on the cable modems is fine for anything around 4mb/s but people who were on 4mb/s that got upgraded to 10mb/s are saying the USB port doesnt allow for 10mb/s.
Switching to Ethernet creates less problems using 10mb/s. Not sure if thats correct in theory, but that is what people are saying.0
