Changing from USB to ETHERNET - CABLE NTL BROADBAND

Hello all

We're having problems using our new laptop because we can't get the router set up! It requires ethernet cables and we've been using usb output from cable box to pc. Tried to simply switch over from usb to ethernet, restart pc, click on explorer but no internet connection. Plug usb back and we're normal again. So what are we doing wrong? Do we need to reinstall Ntl broadband, someone (very kindly) on here said no we don't.

presumably, you have plugged the ethernet cable from the router into the network card of the PC.

If so, try

start run cmd ok

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

ping https://www.google.com

if it is talking tcp/ip you should get some replies.

if not, do a

ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt
notepad c:\ipconfig.txt

and copy and paste the results into the thread (after removing any personal information .. mac addresses etc

Havent got the router connected at all, trying to see if the internet on the pc actually works using the ethernet cable. (thanks for replying by the way!). Should I plug in the router? Plus I have got it right haven't I: the router has to be connected to the pc that is connected to the cable modem (this isnt the laptop). Sorry to sound so dim!

There should be a diagram on how to wire it up in the manual.

The router needs to be connected and switched on. There should be a socket for the cable feed, and four sockets for the ethernet feed to the PC

ok tried that still doesnt work and im a little lost by yor previous message (dont understand jargon!). what i havent tried is what my sister has done as she had the same problem Shes got her usb connecting her modem to pc and then ethernet from modem to router. is this an option to consider?

With your Ethernet Cable plugged into your computer and NTL Cable Modem;

1. Start Button > Control Panel > Internet Options > Connections Tab
2. Click Setup... (New Connection Wizard will open)
3. Click Next > then Next > again
4. Choose Setup my connection manually then Click Next >
5. Choose Connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password then Click Next >
6. Enter a name to identify the new connection then click Next >
7. Enter your NTL supplied User name and password plus confirmation of the password
8. Ensure the Two Tick Boxes are Ticked then click Next >
9. Click Finish

Your connection should be up and working now. Try browsing to google or something from your web browser.

When I set my PC up about a year back, I did not have to enter the user name or password, the always on seemed to work. But when I set up my parents a week ago, I had to do the above. Maybe NTL tightened security up. Or maybe my memory of a year back is faulty !?

normally the router replaces any usb gizmo you have.

*sigh* thank you but tried it , still doesnt work. Off to try what Albertross has suggested (plugging router in)!

First of all I would try get a connection from plugging your cable modem (ethernet) directly into your PC (ethernet).

If this works ok then try put the router between the PC and the modem. What router is it?

It should have a WAN port and maybe 1-2-3-4 LAN ports. Use a ethernet cable (cat-5) from your cable modem to the WAN port on the router. Then use one of the 1-2-3-4 ports to plug the router to the pc.

Then......the router may need setting up....If you tell us what router it is we can say how you config the router.

Most box std routers come with a IP of 192.168.0.1, so using this *should* get u into the router config pages. From here you can select PPPoA/PPPoE etc etc etc....

Are you using an ethernet crossover cable or inline crossover switchbox?

Also, you could be using a crossover cat-5 cable which wont do the job.

ALL the cables you need have to be patch (straight through) cables....
