Could your partner pay the full amount on one of the credit cards. It wouldn't matter if they have been cut up as long as the account is still open. You just need the details from the card (you could request a new card which would probably be with you in a few days). I would imagine that paying the full amount could possibly alleviate the situation. I'm sure there are other options to getting the full amount quickly as well, possibly somekind of hardship loan or borrow it from friends.

The important thing is to take action, speak to everyone you can - landlord, letting agent again, citizens advice - try and get this problem sorted for the short term and then concentrate on long term action to prevent this from happening again.

If you can resolve this issue perhaps in the future you could ask for an invoice for each payment due. My current letting agent does this as standard but I'm moving and my new one doesn't, so I asked them to and it wasn't a problem. You could then pay on receipt of this and then check it against your bank statement a few days later (or use standing order - but still check it once a month).

I always seem to find that letting agents are overly helpful before you move in, but become an absolute nightmare once you are in. Our current one handles all the properties in my street (for the same landlord) and everyone is scared to call her. If our neigbours have a problem they get me to call her as I have a very thick skin!

Back to the original problem - I would do everything I could to get the money to try and prevent being evicted. This may be embarrising especially if asking friends or family but hey! whats the alternative!
  • Dyspraxic means that their brain has to work 5 times harder than a normal brain so they aren't the most organised people. Because something that would take me 5 minutes to do might take the OP 20 minutes to do, so sometimes the saying in 'one ear and out the other' actually does count. I teach Dyspraxic teenagers and you have to make sure that everything is written down for them and that they clearly understand what you've asked them to do and what the task is, so them simply remembering is something they cannot cope with.

I think the OP should talk to the landlord and point out that his letting agency haven't sent any reminders, i don't know any other company who wouldn't send an invoice. Seems like they have forgotten to do their job aswell.

You don't know any other comany that wouldn't send an invoice????

Do Sky send you an invoice each month? No. Nor does my pension scheme or my car insurance or my mortgage lender. Or the council tax or the water board.

You actually show a disservice to other dyspraxia sufferers, if you are implying that without constant reminders they can't be trusted to pay their rent on time.

God, you people are SOOO UNHELPFUL! Why don't you just arrange to meet the OP in person and run them down in your car. There! Job done, you'll be happy then!

OP, you have a recognised medical condition, and IT IS upto people to make allowances for your 'disability.' First off though, just get the money paid, as much as you afford, as soon as possible.

    1) We ARE being helpful. Just because it's not accompanied by hugs, smooches and other vom-inducing smilies doesn't mean it's not helpful.

    2) It is not up to 'people' to make allowances for his 'disability'. He is considered fit to sign a contract therefore he must fulfil his part of it. And you will get no doctor on this planet to say that dyspraxia causes non-payment of due bills. :rotfl:

He and his partner need to sort this mess out. They are both intelligent adults and should not be expecting businesses to chase after them as though they were children. If he has dyspraxia then fine, he needs to take steps to mitigate the impact that will have on how he fulfils his responsibilities. I'm dyscalculic - that doesn't mean I get to pay less on my credit card just because I can't fathom how numbers work or how dates go. It means I have to ensure I set up a system whereby I cannot fail to pay my bill - otherwise I have to accept the penalty for not fulfilling my part of the contract. One of the easiest ways to do this is by writing things down and using tools such as direct debit.

I get a monthly bill form SKy which i pay by direct debit!

    will
    SShhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
  • Thanks Will!! :)

I may have used the wrong word... not 'invoice' maybe 'bill'??? but i'm pretty sure, sky, the council and my car insurance, the gas and electric and water would send me bills and reminders if i hadn't paid.

I'm not saying he can't be 'trusted' just that he needs to sort it and make them aware of what he needs

.. but presumably you will also have been teaching your pupils specific "coping strategies" so that they are better able to deal with what adult life will be throwing their way?

A tenancy agreement states clearly (in writing) that you have to pay a monthly rent and, as others have said, there are straightforward coping strategies to make sure that those payments are made on time, ie set up a standing order or have your own reminder system via diaries, computers, wallplanners.

Any T who doesn't understand their obligations under a contract should take a copy to the local CAB or law centre and seek their own clarification, rather than relying on the other signatory to the contract. This applies whether or not you have dyspraxia.

The OP has a partner living there who should also be taking some responsibility. As the OP mentions hefty bank charges of over 200 quid perhaps he & his partner should also make an appointment to discuss his difficulties with an advisor at the bank.

Agree - hence my request for clarification, in post 19, of what ts-aly meant. Pretty strange coming after a statement of "support" for the OP's specific difficulties:confused:
