I wouldn't touch anything french - peugeot, reanualt, citroen. I'd go for japanese if I could find them - pricier to repair, but generally more reliable.

micra, civic, corolla, yaris, 323, colt. I'd avoid korean at that kind of price. I'd personally not choose the ford either, but then when they go wrong they can be a lot cheaper and easier to fix.

The real key is to get good example of whichever - if you know anyone that can check it out, do so, or see what's out there and splash the extra getting AA to check it, if you know nothing.

I'd go for something Korean. Likely to newer and more reliable and even the smaller cars often have ABS, air bags, air con etc.

    Some to consider

    Daihatsu Cuore (02 reg £1200)
    Daihatsu Sirion (00 reg £1000 - £1500)
    Daihatsu Terios (51 reg £1500)
    Daewoo Kalos (03 - £1500 - £2000)
    Hyundai Amica (01 - £1000 + )
    Prodda Kelisa (03 - £1500 +)

The daewoo and the 3 daihatus are pretty good cars - alot for the cash and all cheap to insure. Never driven the hyundai or perodua though, but look decent enough for a cheap runabout.
