  • Just an update ... after registering with Cable Forum, have been told about newsgroups and to post on the broadband support one, which I've done! Reading the replies others have had is very encouraging, as lots of great tech support replies and action taken to resolve things. I've posted with the modem Downstream SNR (23.4), plus was advised to say a couple of timeslots when posting. Someone else on the M-package is having similar problems ... their modem is 5 years old and they're being sent a new one, so, as my little modem has it's own walking stick (lol) with it being a proper granny at 9 years old, it looks like that may well be offered. Plus another person has posted to explain that all the 'less than 50Mb' packages come from one 'tank' and the new 50Mb package come from a different 'tank', so that's great to know, as it was a bit overwhelming to imagine battling with that kind of extra usage in the same 'tank'!

Stopping using the router hasn't upped the speeds, but to know that great tech support is on the way is great ... visit just been arranged for tomorrow 4-7. [Thanks Pikeyp for pointing me to Cable Forum :-)]

FWIW 2MB M users are going to become 10MB users in the summer at no extra cost

I was going to suggest the newsgroups. So long as you have some sort of net access they are by far the best way of getting support I've found.

Luckily I've not had any problems with broadband and I've found Virgin to be the best broadband for speed.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die

  • Hey, am back online, with a new modem that can handle 10Mb, the rotted cable in the green cabinet replaced, and the indoor cable tightened. Virgin are great. Texted lastnight about today's visit, turned up an hour into the timeslot, straight away said all 2Mb's are getting upgraded from now until summer, starting with Hartlepool, then Stockton, Darlington, etc. He wasn't sure when Middlesbrough was due, but how great it's happening. Thanks gjchester that I got to read about it lastnight; great to read!
Barry Scott: that's great you get your BB so cheap. How good that they listened and gave recompense. Good on you. That email was worth sending!
BillScarab ... thanks, yes, finding the newsgroups is like striking gold. Such a quick response and so helpful and quick a solution. Very impressed.
    Cheers, Cat

I'm glad you got it sorted!

Virgin do seem to get a lot of bad press , but I've had very few problems in the years I've been with them (since the old Telewest days ... through merger with NTL etc, etc) , and any I've had have been sorted out really quickly!!

Hats off to Virgin then .. :T

    Yeah. Glad your sorted

Ive recently seen in my local paper that Virgin are using my local city (I still think of it as 'town' though) as a tester for 'speed throttling'

They seem to think my area is one of the worst in england for internet 'over' usage ~ How DARE they think that :p

Thanks Pikeyp  Yes, I filled in a little survey that VM sent and then a page came up where they were detailing how they are addressing all the feedback they've received from customers, so they most certainly are listening and acting. http://www.virginmedia.com/wehearyou/

Yes, I've had a solid service with them throughout, from NTL days, and problems sorted very quickly. So, well done to Virgin!

Thanks aliEnRIK. Yes, how DARE they ... put a complaint in, as those few hundred meg a week isn't reason to be throttled is it, lol :D There's a list of about 6 places they're testing at ... weren't you the lucky one, lol.

I hadn't realised how much meg I was using until I recently started monitoring ... that watching streaming media on C4 e.g. a 45-minute show, uses up 80 meg, DL'g an iplayer prog can be about 300 meg, then windows updates can take up 500+ meg sometimes, surfing, youtube ... gawd. Fascinating to learn all this stuff. I've decided just to get in the habit of staying off-peak, as want the shiny new modem full speed and means can enjoy watching catchup telly without worrying about streaming. After 2 very very slow weeks, too glad to have the fast speed back to want to do stuff in peak time can do in offpeak time anyways!
