Contents insurance doesn't cover contents?

Options
Short story is my partner (Michelle) had a partner called Scott, they split up 6 months ago and me (Andy) and Michelle are now together.

Scott had contents insurance with Zurich through the AA and today i changed it into mine and Michelle's name, as i had them on the phone, we've just tried claiming for our laptop after one of the kids dropped it and smashed the screen and they are stating it's not covered as we didn't opt for the optional add-on which covers portable items that can be taken out of the home which was never mentioned to us.

I'm a bit miffed by the fact that our contents insurance doesn't cover CONTENTS.

It covers the sofa and TV, and even the remote as even though it's portable, it comes with the TV.

My laptop came with a plug to use in the home, so clearly it's not that portable.

Where do we stand on this?

It didn't break outside of the home, it was broken in the home so clearly this should be covered?

Thanks,

Andy

    Was it a Zurich "Solutions" Policy?

    If you have accidental damage cover, this iem should be covered. Portability refers to items that got damaged or stolen when taken away from insured premises. From what u ve described, this is not the case.
    Though some policies requires you to list specific high value item else it wont be covered
  • We have accidental damage cover, clearly states that in the booklet.

    If you have Accidental Damage Cover it should be covered if the damage occured in your home or within the boundaries of your home. If it occured outside the boundaries of your home you need "Unspecified Personal Possession" Cover on your policy for it to be covered

    Thanks Tinkerbelle, I meant when I said "Unspecified Personal Possession" Cover on your policy. I should have said "Schedule" instead of Policy.
  • Zurich Home Solutions doesn't cover laptops unless you have Personal Possessions on your policy.

    The policy states:
    Accidental damage to:
    • audio, hi-fi, television, telecommunication (including satellite receivers and set top boxes), DVD, video or telecommunication equipment but not mobile phones;
    • computers but not laptop computers, computer software, hand-held computers or electronic toys;
    • satellite television-receiving equipment or television and radio aerials.

    It does cover it if you have the Accidental Damage Extension, the section you have their is the Accidental Damage Cover they provide for audio visual equipment under the "Standard" Policy cover

    Even if you have the additional Accidental Damage, a laptop won't be covered unless you have Personal Possessions. Zurich don't count a laptop as being contents but as a personal possession.
