I need help searching for affordable car insurance for my son.I have been through all the comparison sites and insurers listed on this site and cannot find anyhting under £1,400+ annually.
Son is 18,newly qualified and is just about to buy his first car.Advise more than welcome on the type of car easiest to insure cheaply and insurers please.
After getting riduculously high quotes for the type of cars son prefers (peugeot 407,most insurers wouldnt even give a quote and those who did quoted over £5k)I searched for insuring a 5 year old ford Ka and still the cheapest I found was about £1.5k.
If OH gets the car registered and insured in his name instead with 10 years no claims and adds son as named driver the cheapest is still over £1,000!(407 only £50 more than the smallest car possible)
Am I missing something or is this usual for a newly qualified driver?

This is quite usual unfortunately. However, it is technically illegal to insure the car in your name and add him as a named driver - it is called policy fronting.
Easiest thing you can change to get cheaper insurance is the car itself. Adding parents as named drivers (even if they will not use the car or have insurance to drive other cars anyway) can give a reduction.
If you haven't already try a site like confused.com and keep going back and changing the car. He may have to swallow his pride and drive a crap one for a while until he gets some NCB built up - or if it really is unaffordable wait till time increases his age which also reduces the cost.0 -
407 at 18, bizarre
get a fiesta, saxo, polo, corsa etc, for the first yeyar, if he manages not to crash it the premiums will be much cheaper next year0 -
This question gets asked all the time. A search of this forum would answer your questions, OP0

Forget the insurance for now and look for cars in the lowest insurance group as a statting point. Consider Toyota Yaris 1.0 vvt. Very reliable, cheap to run and hopefully one of the cheapest to insure.
Unfortunately the major influence of the insurance is his age and inexperience. He MUST drive faultlessly for a year or two before those insurance costs start to moderate.
I was rear ended by a young driver last year. I doubt she will be driving now.0 -
try these people although this page is for provisional licence holders they have another site for new qualified

As said before, premium sounds about right / cheap as possible. I'm afraid he simply will not be able to drive anything other than a beantin econobox for a few years. I'm 17 and drive my mum's 1.0 corsa B which is in the cheapest insurance group 1.0

£1400 seems like a pretty good quote to be honest.
he wont get his dream car as his first car (even if it is a strange choice for a young lad, maybe its the coupe he likes, even still?)
small engined cars like has been mentioned above,corsa,ka,fiesta,saxo,clio,etc...
vws and some of the jap cars are a bit more expensive usually to insure for young drivers.
try cis, they gave me the cheapest quote when i was younger. also try elephant and admiral, they are the cheapest for me at the moment, but im not sure if they will insure young drivers....work permit granted!0 -
buy something over 25 years old.... you'd be amazed what you can find if you look round.. had a quote for my son at 17 on a 2.0 Cortina estate from 1983, limited to 6,000 miles a year, just under 200 quid FC.... and if he had a 1.3 allegro, we could reduce that to under 180.... btw, my insurance on the corty was 45 quid a year.... plus 50 quid cashback... its lovely being paid a fiver to insure a car for a year!!0

Kirk you're a star and the 25 year old car idea is a revelation! To the OP, my son is 18, just passed his test and the premiums he was quoted for the usual corsa/fiesta etc were around £1100. Cheapest to qoute was Adrian Flux. You have to ring them, but its an 0800 number. In the end he paid £1320 for a T reg skoda felicia with a years breakdown cover, third party f&t of course.0
