Hungarian? Goulash can't be that pricey to make - lots of root veg involved and loads of side dishes you can do. Plus they do some lovely looking torts and cakes for pudding...Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0

oh starjumper - can you recommend an Armenian cookery book? I adore both Armenian and Georgian food, but recipes are hard to come by..... the cuisine is so rich and diverse. I tried to get a title I had borrowed from the library before via Amazon, but it ended up being out of print. Thanks in advance!"Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -

A very easy typical american meal (at least in the south,) that's fairly inexpensive. Fried chicken, mash, milk gravy, green beans with bacon in for flavouring, sweet corn/corn on the cob.. American biscuits (similar to plain scones) Afters, apple pie with vanilla ice cream, lemon meringue pie, choc meringue pie, any cake etc etc etc.
You could also do BBQ ribs, seasoned up baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, maybe some deviled eggs for more of a summer type menu. Afters, any of the above or a nice fruit salad..
For family type meals, many don't do a starter unless it's a special occassion.

Mexican would be nice and it's very inexpensive. Starter, tortilla chips heated up in oven with fresh salsa. Main, beef and chicken fajitas with fried peppers and onions, refried beans and spicy rice. Also sour cream and guacamole for topping the fajitas. Dessert, sopapillas drizzled with honey.
Now I'm craving my fave mexican restaurant.Take the first step.

Ooh! this is a lovely thread with loads of nice ideas! What about Israeli - Jewish food is lovely - you could do chicken soup with the dumplings, Kreplach (like a sort of ravioli) with latkes (potato cakes) and there are loads of recipes for lovely Jewish cakes!
Or Russian - Borscht and Beef Strogonoff followed by Prunes with walnuts and chocolate
Or Iranian, Malaysian, Japanese, Australian - Thanks! now you have given me something else to spend hours googling:rotfl:Jane
