Charged for F all !!!

Ok, this is the story. I have 2 bank accounts, one for wages, and one for bills. On a friday when I get paid I have a standing order of £150 from the wages account to the bills account. However, I went online and transfered the £150 manually, therefore the standing order failed as there wasn't enough funds in the wages account.

So I had a lovely letter this morning informing me that I have been charged £39 for this. I've been th the bank, they say its not a bank error so they wont reverse it, the phone bank has also stated this.

There is no way I am paying for transfering my own money.

I need help and I need it now !

Might sound like a silly question to ask you, was it definetly a Standing Order or was it a Direct Debit. The only reason why I ask is that I always thought there was a difference between the two styles of payment when funds are being 'called for' payment/transfer. Our mortgage payment is S/Order and I know if there isn't enough funds there to do the payment I don't get charged(Nationwide Flex account to Nationwide Mortgage). I then catch up on the payment in the Branch a couple of days later. I know this isn't a specific answer but it's what I experience with a Standing Order. I'm sure others will have a definitive description about S/O's & DDebits

Why did you transfer it manually if you knew you had a standing order set up to do it?

£39 sounds very steep - who do you bank with. I am with Abbey who I think charge £30.

As it was your error, I am not sure there is much you can do about the charge, possibly get them to reduce it if you haggle a bit.

Sorry I cannot help, good luck.
  • Just set up the standing order, and at the time of the day it had yet to go through, was about 3pm. So I just did it manually, I didn't think I'd get charged, got a right shock today when I read the letter. Its a joke.

I recommend you read the thread "Bank Charges - Illegal?":

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=115112

dont have to go thru all 700+ posts, just the ones by dchurch24 in particular. Looks like you have an good chance of getting the money refunded as a matter of "goodwill", although legally (so it seems), the bank isnt allowed you to charge so much.
  • Yeah I'm already in the process, I've sent 2 letters away for the accounts. But this happened after, so we'll just have to wait and see. They said that they wont offer me a good will gesture as there has already been two, and they only offer one in a life time.

  • If you don't mind me saying - A bank makes a mistake they should apologise and refund/compensate you for loss but if the mistake is your own doing why blame the bank??
You say that they have refunded charges twice in the past why was this? Whose mistakes were they?
  • The standing order was going to go out as it was set up with your authorisation. How was the bank supposed to know that you'd transfered the funds online. ? Not the banks fault here is it

I have had 3 goodwill gestures from Nationwide without having to fight for it. Once you have compleated the first claim send a letter requesting the charges from this issue. You have no limit as to how many times you can claim, they are ALL penalty charges so as long as the bank charge extortionate rates the customer can keep demanding it back. Good luck, and don't back down it is your right to claim a refund, and don't forget you have 6 years from the date of the charge with 8% added on, save it up :D:D
