Thanks for highlighting the post by the chemist Gen. This is a subject dear to our hearts in the viva house.
My DH studied under a Nobel Laureate at one of the closed chemistry departments. He then studied for his PhD at another closed department, with the effect that brilliant, ground-breaking facilities and people have been lost to the British Education system. You've got to wonder what's happening when you have had Laureates handing their degrees back in disgust and the centre of DNA discovery in the UK closing.
How the hell are we to lead the way and be a centre of comparative advantage in cutting edge science when first, we don't engender an interest in science at school and second, we close facilities that are expensive, but are equally at the forefront of scientific advance in this country? Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

Science is difficult and expensive. Better to have a dozen mediocre graduates in Sociology than one good physicist seems to be the current thrust of policy.
As the old London (Jewish?) saying has it, "Never mind the quality, feel the width".0 -
Or maybe they are putting all the money into Media Studies. This government really needs more spin doctors after all...Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? ...to re-educate counter revolutionaries possibly???0 -
Well, I was starting with a lower target - like putting lots of positive comments on the Guardian website - they are clearly lacking there. But hey, counter revolutionary re-education, why not? Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Blimey. I'm no Gordon fan but I am surprised by the number and tone of the responses - they are almost unanimously anti-Gordon. If this is in any way representative he's in trouble for the next election.0 -
Nu Labour are heading for melt-down at the next election, and they know it.
Don't be surprised if they use any sign on civil unrest to invoke the powers they have given themselves to make up new legislation 'on the hoof' to show the electorate who is in charge."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0
