If I had to pick 5 things that I would be devastated to live without they would be:

    Potatoes
    Flour
    Eggs
    Milk
    Cheese

And the cupboards must contain a multitude of flavourings, like stock cubes, salt & pepper, soy sauce, cocoa powder, yeast, jam, sugar, herbs and garlic. I can knock up a lot using just those things!

Hmmmmm now how on earth do I cut it down to just five items  ... so how about five categories :grinheart

Dried staples - beans, lentils, rice, pasta, bulgar wheat etc
Tinned food - tomatoes, beans, meat & fish
    Oils
    Herbs, Spices & Seasonings
Baking stuff - flour, bicarb, sugar etc

Wow that was hard to do considering I could probably stock a small shop with my storecupboard items :o

You know, if I was starving, I know whose house I'd take my begging bowl to....

...... oh, and I wouldn't be without dried skimmed milk powder - great for making white sauces, custard etc (and even for drinking in an emergency - but I do mean emergency!)
  • Five top store cupboard things (not things I keep in the fridge):

    Wholemeal flour
dried milk powder (very handy for cooking & when you run out)
    stock powder
    oats (porridge, biscuits, in bread)
    herbs/spices (I know that's not one item!)

Edit: can't believe i forgot rice and pasta!

I'm assuming this means long-life goods not the fresh basics like bread or veg.

    Tinned tomatoes
Rice (with pasta as runner up)
Mixed herbs (a selection is even better)
Curry paste (a selection of spices would be better)
Savoury Noodles - I know they're not very healthy but they are quick, easy and cheap. All you need is some leftover scraps of meat and some veggies and you have chow mein for dinner.

A friend of mine once said "you'll never go hungry with a bag of pasta and a tin of tomatoes in the cupboard". If you're feeling rich you can add an onion to that.

My mental shopping list goes "bread, milk, fizzy water, dinner pud and breakfast" so hopefully when I go shopping we will at least have food for the next 24 hours ;)
  • Strong white flour (for bread)
    Yeast
    Baked Beans
    Noodles
    Oil
