at the very least your car insurance company will want to find out why the cable snapped before they will indemnify you.

It is very unlikely the car insurers will pay for the damage as a comprehensive motor policy covers the damage to the vehicle and any damage the vehicle does to ANY ONE ELSE'S PROPERTY. I assume he owns the house so it will not pay as the garage door is not owned by a third party

A standard buildings policy will cover for impact damage, so he wouldnt need AD cover.

I would say this could well be correct, though some policies will have an exclusion clause to exclude cover for cases where impact is by the policy holder's own vehicle. Not all have this though so it is worth a check in both the general exclusions and the exclusions specific to that section of the policy.

    EDIT:
I was curious so have had a look. Admiral's home insurance is written though BDML who are a broker, using a shared policy wording.

Section 9 of buildings cover states:
    9 Collision by:
    i aircraft
    ii aerial devices
    iii road or rail vehicles
    iv animals
    or anything dropped from them
    The only exclusions are:

    Loss or damage caused by
    a domestic pets
    b insects

  • I am still waiting for them to get back to me but it looks as if it should be OK, the underwriters (legal and general) are still waiting for the details to come through but they said that collision is always covered.

L&G are normally very good on claims, it would be worth getting one or preferably two quotes for the garage door while you are waiting as if you have quotes they are happy with they can probably give you the authority to go ahead quite quickly
