I rather like the idea of the SmartPrice card - I'm rather cynical about Valentine's Day myself: I was in Paperchase on December 19th and saw Valentine's cards on sale already. They clearly want our money!

I think my girlfriend would see the funny side in these, given that she doesn't usually get a card from me...

Incidentally, last year, I made my friend a Tesco Value birthday card for a friend who works at Tesco - unlike the ones that have been posted so far, it's in their current branding: http://galah.src.gla.ac.uk/~martin/tesco.pdf

Clearly they do want your money - some regular looking cards were 4 quid at one shop i looked at. It's a printed piece of paper! Production cost on that card must have been 10p tops.

I saw an article in the paper about Tesco selling a really cheap valentines card and my bf joked that that was the one he had got for me. Luckily (for him) it wasn't.

  • Is this not just the same psychology as Tesco etc packaging their own brand to be as unattractive as possible, to deter customers from buying it and therefore increase profits while appearing to offer 'cheap' options?
