What type of dog would get on with a

Doberman?
We have a 17month old doberman she is my baby! I'm thinking that she might want abit of company, and I'm considering getting another puppy. But not sure where to start. She loves the tortoise and canary we pet sit for but they can't play with her lol! I'm not keen on rotties (no offence) so what else?

    Mongrel!

Why don't you have a look around your local recsue centre for a medium size bitsa. Dobis tend to play rather rough so how about something with a bit of Lab in it or maybe GSD x?

You cant really say what sort of dog would get on with her. They are all individuals. Only way, as Norbertsmum says is go to a local rescue and meet up with dogs they think will be suitable.

Buying a pup doesnt mean they will get on when the pup becomes mature. Its best to get a dog who has already developed his personality. Trust your dobbie is spayed already?

Yes we had her spayed last year, thanks for the posts. A rescue dog is a great idea, I will have a think about that.

If you've set your heart on a pup then don't rule out the rescues either, the ones I have contact with are over run with pups at the moment.

  • dobermanns also turn up in rescue quite often too, if you want another one!

I would recommend looking at rescue dog so you can assess how the two get on before you take it home!

If you already have a !!!!!, then getting a dog would seem to be the best way to go to make it less likely there would be any competition between the two - the less like your current dog any new comer is, the less likely there is to be hierachy struggles.
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • No idea where you are, but there is a dobermann boy in my local pound/rescue - poor thing is just ten months old and so emaciated...

There are similar dogs in pounds and rescues all over the country, and it sounds like you could offer a great home for the right dog!

Do let us know how it all pans out wont you :) Yes, look at that little boy above, desperate for a good home.

When we got a companion for our disabled though young Parson Russell, we were so pleased that they hit it off straight away and have continued like that. One dog will always be alpha - fortunately the new little boy was happy for the Parson Russell to hold that position :) so there has been no aggro at all. Its wonderful to have 2 or more - very best of luck in your search.
  • Hi! Just love dobies !!

When we started to look for a second dog my heart was set on a spaniel. As my dobie is the most fantastic natured, laid back dog I didn;t want a second dog that would terrorise her so temperament was the most important thing to me.

My dobie's 8 and our rescue cocker is 5, both female and they've got on fine from day 1, the cocker follows my dobie everywhere. I appreciate that I've been really lucky tho. In the evening I've got Fizzy the dobie sitting on my feet and Tiffany the cocker sitting on my lap gazing adoringly into my eyes.

However, getting a smaller dog when you've got a big dog is not without it's risks and Tiffany has been 'run over' a few times by Fizzy the dobie as she's rocketed out of the back door after a cat. Luckily no serious injury, but this was something I didn't think of having to be on guard for.

    Happy hunting :D

Foreign Correspondant that picture is heartbreaking. Mia is a total gannet, she would eat all day if she had the choice, that poor pup looks starved, how can anyone do that.
Where abouts is that Pup FC?
