Help! My iron is broken.

Can anyone help? I've had my iron for a couple of years, and now it has decided to pack up and I'm loathe to buy another one without trying to have a go at fixing this one first- especially if it's only something simple!

Basically, the light comes on, however the sole plate remains cold no matter how long the iron is plugged in to the wall. The power outlet is working ok, as I am using it to charge my phone, vac, etc.

Anyone know what the problem might be, and any ideas for fixing it?

The model is a Tefal Virtuose FV9140.

Sounds like the heating element has gone - would be more cost effective to get a replacement.

Agreed, and try to avoid Tefal, they don't seem to be the best quality.

Thanks for the advice. But why do you say that about Tefal? Which magazine have a Tefal iron as one of their Best Buys- this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0013HKRO8/ciaouk-kitchen-21/ref=nosim

First hand experience of their products, 2 irons that didn't last more than 18 months, maybe I was unlucky, but I wouldn't buy anything Tefal again, even if they are Which .. Best Buys.

I have a Tefal iron that is about two years old. I think it is a great iron but obviously can't comment on its longevity. However, at about £35 a pop it's hardly a bank breaker.

Buy cheap iron, keep receipt. Fails to work, take back, replace, keep receipt..

    etc
  • I've had Tefal irons for the last 10 years and they've always been brilliant. The only reason I've had to replace them is when the OH or I have been stupid enough to drop them on the floor. Even then they still work even though the casing is cracked and the water tank leaks a bit!

Got the last one half price from Tesco Direct.

Another vote against Tefal, everyone I've had has leaked or gone pop, I also found they were not non-stick.
I have had a Philips for the last 4 years and love it.
    It's similar to this http://www.ciao.co.uk/Philips_GC_4340_AZU__6319847.
