I've had this with both of mine. Lower the cotbed for now and make sure she can not get out... I never bothered with a stair gate - both of mine have always been good with stairs. I put my second child into the cot when my little boy was 2 1/2. Before that we had turned the cotbed into a bed as he did the same as yours. He used to pile his toys and blankets up at the edge of the cot and climb out. He went into a normal bed with a bed guard. My little girl now just over two has been in bed mode (with the cot bed) for months now and is fine. One of my friends put her little one into a bed at 13 months and everything was ok. You just have to do what you feel comfortable with. Do you want to put them into a bed now?

It does not matter how good your kids are with stairs, mine were equally good but in the night if they wake disorientated thats when they could fall.

We had two stair gates, one at the bottom which was only ever used for the first few months of crawling and climbing. Then one at the top which was closed religously every night, does not matter then what bed you have you can sleep safe in the knowledge that if they get out of bed they aren't going to fall down the stairs. Far better a couple of holes in the wall than a broken neck.

  • Whoever said about trying a sleeping bag, nice idea but don't bother!

My little girl was in a sleeping bag til 2 and a half, it never stopped her climbing or walking she just used to shuffle around in it with a foot in each corner. We put her in a toddler bed once she could climb out of the cot and i was convinced she would never stay in it but she did.

Could you put her in a bed and put a stairgate across the bedroom door opening so she can't get out of her room? I know someone who used this method successfully

Then you end up with the child yelling from behind the gate, when she wakes up.

I have a friend who has a stairgate permanently across her living room, her three kids are penned up in there all day. Thats if they are not strapped into high chairs.

I didn't say I liked the idea or that I did it myself

Funnily enough my grandaughter (two and a half) stayed last night, we keep a gate across her bedroom door, but haven't bothered closing it for ages as if she wakes in the night she usually calls out and dosen't get out of her cot bed. At 3.30am I heard her call out, I got out of bed to go into her and she was downstairs! She thought it was morning. I shall make sure the gate is closed from now on, she's great on stairs but I worry that if she's half asleep she could fall.

My nephew is 19 months and my bro and SIL have just put him in a toddler bed, because he also managed to swing his leg up and climb out of his cot! He seems happier in his bed though (tho got up a thousand times the first night - the novelty!) and they have a stairgate also so he can't wander off downstairs!

My DD went from cot to big bed at about 16 months. I put a bed guard on the side and it was like she never even noticed. I also did it in the darker winter months so that her room was dark when she went to bed which I think helped. DS went from cot to toddler bed when he was about 2 and a half, mainly because I kept putting it off because I thought he'd find it hard to settle, being more of a busybody than DD, but he's been fine really, tries it on now and again but just gets put back to bed, or ignored until he goes to sleep.

We have a stair gate top and bottom of our stairs because they are really steep - and I agree with the posters who have said that they are more for peace of mind at night than anything else. Neither of them have had gates on their bedroom doors and we usually get a bit of a lie in because they play in each others rooms in the morning.

To the OP, I would use the cot bed as a bed for now because I assume the new baby is going to be in a moses basket for a while so I'm guessing you've probably got nearly a year before the new baby will need it. By which time your DD should be fine for a big bed.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

Our DD (2 next month) climbed out of her cot bed a few weeks ago - we said if she does it again we will change it to a bed, but so far she has not (ideally want to wait until our friends have come to stay as I don't want her disturbing their baby!)

Eldest went into a full size bed when whe was 26 months with a rail. We still close the stair gate for the eldest at night (who is 4 now!) as I worry about her falling down the stairs when half asleep!

Not necesserily, I had a gate on my living room, so DD couldnt get in my kitchen cupboards or into the bathroom. She was fine, it also meant I could leave her in her own company whilst I washed up or something. They're going to wake you up anyway regardless of where the gate is.
OP, if it were me Id wait till she gets out again then probably change into a cot bed. She might not do it again now for a while so Id wait and see.
