help re bedding for 16mnth old

hello all....
the situation is that my DD is almost 16 months old and this mornig, dh and i were woken by a pitter patter of feet, our bedroom door opening and dd standing at door saying "Hiiyaaa!".
funny as it was, it is also quite scary = she somehow has climbed out of her cotbed, bypassed the stairs (with no safety gate) and made her way into our bedroom.
now my dilemma is....do i lower her cot to the next level, which is possible, or do i get her a childrens bed and keep her cotbed for the baby on the way!? (im 4months pregnant)

any advice or opinions greatly recieved.
carla.

we have had this and the only option was a bed and safety gate on the door, all of mine have been out the cot before they were 2 as they worked out how to climb out! my little sister actually broke her arm climbing out a cot when she was little and once they learn how to do it they dont forget!!

    good luck!

I also have a 16 month old and so will be watching this thread with interest.

Do you have any idea how she managed to get out?

I have heard stories like this before so we always keep the stairgate shut at night!

We have been looking at beds recently but DS still seems so young and I wonder if he would ever stay in a proper grown up bed for long enough to actually get to sleep.
  • I've had this with both of mine. Lower the cotbed for now and make sure she can not get out... I never bothered with a stair gate - both of mine have always been good with stairs. I put my second child into the cot when my little boy was 2 1/2. Before that we had turned the cotbed into a bed as he did the same as yours. He used to pile his toys and blankets up at the edge of the cot and climb out. He went into a normal bed with a bed guard. My little girl now just over two has been in bed mode (with the cot bed) for months now and is fine. One of my friends put her little one into a bed at 13 months and everything was ok. You just have to do what you feel comfortable with. Do you want to put them into a bed now?
  • hi my 2 yr old stopd sleeping in cot after new year, screamed about it, so tried putting her into cotbed, and that made her worse, after a few nightrs of sleepin in with us.... i got her a 3/4 bed with peppa pig bed covers, amde a big deal or how this is her pepepa bed. and she sleeps in it no bother, she can get out and in, but dosnt in the middle of the night, we have no stair gate, never hav had one, as no need, and know she wont try and go downstrais so everythings ok

i have NO idea how she did, i guess she just hoisted the leg up and over. lol. there were no toys or teddys to help her!!!!
i am in 2 minds about it.....i want to put her in a bed for her own safety, but dont due to my own selfish reasons (picking up ALL her clothes that she will have took out of wardrobe and chested drawers to try on and playing with all her toys in bedroom the next morning!)
She would whinge for about 3 or 4 mins when she initially goes into her cot at night no matter how tired she is, so i know if she was in a bed it would be a case of getting up out of bed at her own leisure to carry on playtime!
    oh,i just dont know.
i know there is no right or wrong that someone can tell me, but i just dont know what to do!!!! :S

I wonder if putting her in a sleeping bag might help give you a bit of piece of mind until you decide?

Due to the cold weather our DS goes into his grobag when he settles for the night and I guess that also restricts how they can move around a little. Sometimes he will be standing up in his cot in the morning but most of the time he is just sitting playing with his teddy and calling for me.

Are the matresses in cotbeds generally higher placed than in cots?

I am worried now about my DS who is in a cot, especially as he is on the 95th centile height wise. It seems to me impossible that he would get out but I have heard that they do so and am worried (I am a mother, therefor I worry :rotfl: ).

We are wondering if we should go for an 'interim' toddler bed or just go to a normal single bed that he will be in for a lot longer.

The toddler beds are so sweet but the one I want is over £200 and it seems a lot of money for only a year or so.

Hmmmmm, something else to ponder over!
  • Id buy a cheap cot for the second baby and use the cot bed for your daughter. That way by the time your baby is ready for a bed your daughter would be going into a full size one. Or you could put your daughter straight into a big bed but you may find its too far off the ground for her getting in and out.

i remember when my lads (twins) were babies, and one of them climbed out, and banged his mouth on the bars, resulting in a lot of blood pouring from his mouth, was only 15 mths old at the time, and on the 95th centile, soon bought them beds, but the beds where quite high for the little ones, so til they reached there second birthday, they just slept on matteress on the floor

I would lower the cot bed (I have always put mine on the lowest setting as soon as baby can sit up).

I would also get a stairgate put up.

IMO 16 months seems just a little too young for a baby to go into a big bed, I think she would be a lot safer in the lowered cot and wearing a sleeping bag

My youngest is 13 months and loves climbing, but she has never managed to get out the cot.........yet! ;)

    thanks forall your replies.
cant remember who mentioned the sleeping bags - i have about 4 of these, but since she could walk and stand she has absoloutely hated being in them as she cant move around as much in them. she does move around alot in her sleep, moving from her back to her front etc, she also usually sleeps on her front with her knees up under her belly (if u folllow me!?) and i think that the sleeping bags stop her from getting comfortable in bed therefore i have a very cross baby both at night time and then in the morning cos she hasnt had a good nights sleep!
we put the stairgate on top of stiars last night before we went to bed, but this morning was woke by dd shouting for "mama" as usual - so didnt succeed in getting out of her cot this morning.(thank goodness!)....so still debating with myself what to do for the best!
