Get a text ticket from Birmingham Snow Hill to Marylebone with Chiltern Rail for as little as £5, tube across to Victoria and then the Gatwick Express from there.

£5 ? You gotta be joking. OK at some times of day maybe but not first thing in the morning when it's usually £25. And I still wouldn't be confident of getting to Gatwick on time

Realistically travel on the overnight coach or go the evening before

I did the route myself on a friday morning when there was work on the west coast line and got into Marylebone for 9.45am. And yes! I was very surprised to get a ticket that cheap so early in the day.
  • my ticket cost 18 pound for 2 adults out and 7.25 bck for 2 adults and 2 kids:eek:
i just booked early and shopped around till i found the best price, its not worth split ticketing to gatwick though as the gatwick express costs more than the journey to euston:confused:

There used to be a direct train but I have a bad feeling the Department of Transport have done away with it. You could go via Watford Junction, which would avoid travelling through London on the tube.

There used to be two or three direct trains a day, but iirc none of them would have arrived in time for an 11am flight, and it was the train operator's decision to remove them not the DoT's. You can still follow the same route if you want, changing once at Reading (slower than London but probably advisable if you want to avoid the capital in rush hour).
  • Thankyou all for your helpful replies, the dissision has been made to stay over the night before as feel like it would be far to tight time wise to travel in the morning.

Greenface, You must be a Seasick Steve fan???
My mind tends to wander............If found please return;)

It's actually rather difficult to use the same route - the bit in West London had been replaced by a once weekly bus from Ealing Broadway to Kensington Olympia and then some obscure station in south London. The papers picked up on it some weeks back and on its possible dubious legality.

Whilst it was Cross Country's decision to remove the service it was DoT's not to insist they carried on with it (and provide funding) or arrange a proper alternative.

You can still use FGW from Reading to Gatwick via Guildford, as you could before. One change from Brum normally.

Most of the Brum to Gatwick/Brighton trains used the route via Guildford anyway, and it's this I was referring to when I said you can still do it. I believe (but may be wrong) that only one of the three direct daily services went via the Kensington route.
