london 3 days..........getting stressed just looking

i have managed to book a cheap train deal to get us there and back and now i have to book a hotel for 3 nights... our train is arriving at Marylebone station so we would ideally like to stay thereabouts ( i think) anyway i have typed in: hotels near marylebone, london.town, cheap deals, blah blah u get the picture..
some are coming up at well over £100 for one night, some of the cheaper end have got not very good reviews, yep we looked at tripadvisor too..
it's our wedding anniversary and would love somewhere nice but nottoo pricey!!
would i be better off looking outside of the area?? i dont really want travelodge tho..
i spotted innkeepers lodges which are lovely but they are well outside the area, for example the price for 3 days in one is only £140 including breakfast but the nearest to marylebone is Northolt and i am sure i read that it was 39 mins away!!

please can anyone point me in the right direction of where i need to look, just for 2 adults, 27-30 march...
many many thanks

p.s. i have searched this forum for LONDON and had a look at the posts too

  • It says on their website that it is only 18 minutes away from Marylebone to Northolt. It doesn't look too far on the tube map http://www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/standard-tube-map.pdf

You only have to do that journey the day you arrive and leave, Rest of the time you are on a direct line into Central London. I wouldn't hesitate in staying there

If I were you, I'd head over to Edgeware Road and get on the Circle and District line to Kensington.

There's plenty of lovely hotels there to chose from within your budget including the Copthorne Tara http://www.millenniumhotels.co.uk/copthornetarakensington/index.html and Millennium Gloucester http://www.millenniumhotels.co.uk/millenniumgloucester/index.html

Or you could go the other direction over to Bloomsbury where there are also some lovely hotels. Both areas are relatively sane parts of the city and a lot cheaper than the more central hotels most of the time.
  • Don't get too stressed, something will fall into place pretty soon. These days we have so many choices, so much information available it just confuses us even more.

You may of already tried lastminute.com already, in addition to named hotels they do some top secret hotels where the name of the property is revealed after you have booked.

There is a thread here where people have revealed some of the hotels.

We used Laterooms.com before but that was very last minute ie the day before and you can get some fantastic deals, but booking inadvance I wouldn't use that site as you tend to get better deals booking directly with the hotels.

I've just looked at a hotel that we stayed in August last year and would go back to again. (The Hoxton Hotel) and the total rate for the 3 nights is £280 similar prices to the millennium hotels (Saturday night rate is high compared to the sunday night at £58). Hotel lobby isn't as grand as the millennium hotels, more trendy. It's not a fantastic location, will mean a change of tubes a few times (fab for those on going into kings cross by train) and really good reviews on tripadvisor. It's a 10 minute walk from Fifteen Restaurant set up by Jamie Oliver where you can get a nice breakfast and we thought the prices weren't bad.

Have you planned some nice things to do yet in London for your anniversary ?

    Hope this helps

Have you looked at Premier Inn Kings Cross?

Usually about £65 per night and right on the door step of one of Londons biggest interchanges.
  • lastminute.com are good. The unnamed luxury hotels.

Personally, though, I'd head out to Docklands, E14. Nice hotels. I wouldn't stay near Marylebone as it's a bit of a dump - and you'll be paying through the nose.
You'll be arriving at a decent enough interchange. Be brave. Travel a little further than the doorstep you arrive on :D

The Ramada at Ealing Common has a double room for the 3 nights you want for £40 per room per night. You need to go via the daily mail link and deselect breakfast to get this rate. It is by the tube station (zone 3), so about 20 min train journey to South Kensington for the museums on the district line and few more stops to the westminster to see the Thames embankment, houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey. 10 minute walk or 1 stop on tube to Ealing Broadway which has a large shopping centre and lots of places to eat and drink. It would be about a half hour journey from Marylebone on the tube, involving changes. it is about 3 star so similar grade to Innkeepers lodge. Also night buses n7 and n207 run from Tottenham Court Road/ Oxford Street to Ealing Common station every 30 minutes (also takes about 30 mins on bus).

For the Innkeepers Lodge -Northolt is about a 45 min tube journey (zone 5) to Marylebone or South Kensington for example and there is not a lot to do around there, as not good shopping, restaurants etc. The nearest real shopping centre, restaurant area etc would be at White City (Westfields) about 20 mins by tube.
  • Also check out Imperial Hotel group, I've stayed in a few of them.
Good points usually about £70/night inc brekfast and very central, most are right by british museum so you save time on travelling and lots of cash on tubes. There are also a few nice pubs close by too.
Bad points are the 1970's decor although clean mind you retro is back in fashion!

Docklands can be a pain to get to and from so check transport connections into town etc first
