Travelling to Malaga

I am planning a 2 week holiday in a villa in Spain. The villa itself is extremely cheap (and my sister-in-law has been there and rates the accommodation.)
I'm trying to get myself, wife and 2 children there as cheaply as possible.
Easyjet want £1180 for flights and car hire for the 2 weeks.
I would consider driving there, catching a ferry or Eurostar to France and doing a road trip.
Has anyone done this before? How did it go?
We could camp on the way down, or stay in hotels.
Does anyone know where to stay? Costs? Petrol prices in France and Spain? Toll roads, etc.?
All advise greatly appreciated.

if going from the uk. I would sail down to santander/bilbao and drive down in your own car. Have done this particular drive in one day from salou with a caravan on the back!
Ryan air fly cheaply to malaga but not sure where you want to fly from0 -
Thanks for the messages so far.
I'm travelling from Stansted, and during the first 2 weeks of August.
The ferry to Bilboa quoted at £1700 return, so that's ruled out.
Just wondered about availability of cheapish accommodation if I drove from Calais.0 -
Driving would be crazy: it is such a long journey!
Use a tool like Kayak to search for affordable flights, and check all London airports.
Worry about car hire once you have found your flights.0 -
have you checked out bmibaby as I am getting flights to malaga going in august too and the total cost for a family of 4 is under £600 and that's flying from Cardiff, we have also found car hire for about £200 for the two weeks
as for the drive, I looked into doing this too, even thought of taking the car train or getting the trainhotel but it just was not cost effective, the bmi flights from cardiff were by far the cheapest option0 -
What about ryanair from stansted? They fly to Malaga?0

Almeria or Granada airports might be cheaper.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

By train? Well worth considering
http://www.seat61.com/Spain.htm#Malaga
has all the details. With 4 of you would would have a sleeping compartment to yourself.0 -
the train will cost you about £1100 - I checked this out earlier this month - this includes the sleeper but unfortunately it is still more expensive than flying, I also looked at getting interrail tickets, for the family they would cost £688 but that does not include the cost of the sleeper or the additional charges that you can be charged on some of the trains
I have also looked into going to Granada - ryanair go there but it was just as expensive as going to malaga
I have just checked again and monarch are doing flights from gatwick for 700 for all 4 of you, this seems like the cheapest option so far other than the cardiff flights with BMI0
